However, when my dog was a pup we did " puppy play" at a local raw dog food shop that was great socialization and was safe because they were all still babies. When they get older and mature is when Shiz hits the fan on occasion with mixing dogs in confined spaces. Our male doesn't play nice with others, and our female is a run-awayer. Our greyhound rescue org has weekly dog park get togethers during the nicer months and DH will often take her. I used to go too, but I hate making small talk with the people there, haha. Sometimes I feel bad, but she really doesn''t play with other dogs when we take her, and wants to just hang out with us. It's pathetic really ;) We have a big back yard so she gets plenty of daily activity, and she's well-socialized with other dogs -- she plays well when she sees friend or family dogs and on walks -- so it doesn't seem to be an issue. We don't have a proper 'dog park' within walking distance, but there is an informal one in the big park a mile from us (dogs are allowed off leash, but it isn't fully fenced in). I've taken him a few times, but by the time we walk a mile there, my little 10 year old pup is tired and doesn't play that much anyway. He used to love it when we were in NYC and closer to the park, but he just generally doesn't play with other dogs as much as he's gotten older.
