Cleaning and the doctor check up are two different appointments at our dentist's so I always bring LO when I have my appointment. He has been doing well and it helps that he's allowed to sit in my lap. First time awful, by 3 she had fun! I would wait until 3 if we didn't have insurance. My second has no problem going but I probably wouldn't have taken him early (18m) if it wasn't covered and I wasn't already going. We have dental insurance and take him to a pediatric dentist. I had a terrible experience as a child and I want my kids to not be afraid of the dentist. DD2 started going just before 2, only because I was already taking DD1 and figured I might as well. But I wouldn't go out of my way to take her, and definitely not pay for it (our Dental is Family, so whether we have 1 or a billion kids on it, they are all covered). DH's dad is a dentist and says anything before 3 is unnecessary. But that you can feel free to take them before them if you really want to and/or want to get them used to it. He has the fluoride treatments done at his wellness appointments. Although our insurance only covers 1 fluoride treatment a year, so we have to pay for the second out of pocket. That's annoying because it's recommended for kids every 6 months, but insurance hasn't updated their coverage. He likes the dentist and hasn't had an issue with opening his mouth for them/x-rays/etc. If I had to pay out of pocket and my kid didn't cooperate I might think about waiting until 3 too. DH and I both have dentist appointments this summer and we are going to bring her with us so she gets an idea of what to expect. Our dentist said DD can sit at the chair and look at the tools when she goes with us.
