She texts me every now and then but has cut back since I never respond. She is very "you are like a real daughter to me, I love you so much" and I am very "arm's distance please, we are in-laws and I have a mother of my own". Don't get me wrong, she is a very very sweet lady but our personalities are complete opposites. Thankfully, after 6 years of marriage Rob Sr. has learned how to mitigate and things aren't too bad, as long as I'm not around her alone, and our visits with her aren't longer than a few days. I wouldn't mind except the conversations typically last for over an hour and I'm not a phone person! I barely do any of the talking. I love my MIL, and wish that we didn't live across the country from them. We talk on our own every week to two weeks and text on and off throughout. Probably will be a whole lot more once the boy comes along too. I talk to my own mom less, mostly because she isn't into the phone as much as MIL. She LOVES cooking for us so I let her have her way in the kitchen while she's here...TOTALLY fine with me! :) I love my MIL (as much as you can love a MIL i guess). I think it's because she doesn't have any daughters and i'm the closest to one that she has. She's actually pretty wonderful. I guess i'm in the minority thinking their MIL is wonderful. In the weeks that we don't see them, I try to call her at least once a week to catch up and see how they're doing... After that I was over her. At one point I made an attempt to reach out, but she always plays the victim in every situation. I'm pregnant now, and it's something that comes to my mind a lot. It is getting better, though. I wrote her a letter to open up the lines of communication. I had to essentially forget our rocky past and forgive her. (I still think she's nuts though.) MIL bbsits our 2 y/o nephew so she would come over a lot or call me for company I think. It's also nice if I get tied up at work she is willing to let the dog out for us, or close windows in rain. She used to have a habit of coming in constantly (think everybody loves Raymond!) but DH addresses it and she calls first now ;) her dog drives me nuts with barking sometimes--he gets mine going--but overall it's helpful. We only communicate in person, and I often try to avoid long conversations. She is your average overprotective Asian mother who treasures her son. I just get in the way. :(
