Never... but LO is only 17 months and I don't think it would be effective at this age to even try!

I give him one warning and if he continues, timeout happens immediately.

Never. If she does something that constitutes a time out (hitting, kicking, spitting) she goes right to it and there is no threat.

@catomd00: same! The first time she got one she was so confused.

@Foodnerd81: I'm sure in the moment it's maddening to hear her say, but that is kind of funny, too!

Once. We don't do time outs but I got pushed over the edge a few months ago. She had no idea what I was talking about lol.

It always seems like a lot lately, but it is really effective! We only have to give him an actual time out every few weeks. I try to save it for times he is really breaking rules, being unsafe, or purposefully disobeying.

Apparently we do it too much because my 2.5 yo has been being naughty, then going, "do I want to go in time out?" She's been pushing boundaries like crazy lately. I follow up usually if she continues the bad behavior though.

At 22 months DD has been put in timeout 4-5 times - usually 60-90 seconds in her crib while we're in the room or nearby. But lately I find myself wanting to "threaten" (such an awful word!) her with it more and more as she is pushing boundaries since it catches her attention. Most times I stop myself so I'm not making empty threats and so it doesn't lose its potency when we really do use it, but sometimes it's so hard!
