@edelweiss: @Smurfette: I feel you. Around the 4 month mark it got difficult for us and we had a few trips where the last 40 minutes on the road were just screaming tears. That was around the holidays when it felt like staying home was totally impossible due to family obligations. And my dad lives in the mountains, so we couldn't even stop to console him!

Scribble used to conk out as soon as we got moving in the carseat. Over time he has got to the point that he stays awake when we are traveling. I tend to reserve his favorite toys for travel. He loves all the crinkly stuff. On the way to the beach he played with an empty wipes bag for an hour. Complete lifesaver.

@NovBaby1112: I KNOW RIGHT?!!? We used to guard his bedtime very closely (between 4-6 months of age). It got to be really isolating and insanity-inducing. We went to the beach right when he turned 6 months old and we were forced to be more flexible. That increased my confidence that we could survive schedule upsets. That week the time changed to DST. After the time change, he started going to bed later and sleeping in later. I haven't had to change it back yet and I am enjoying the freedom! Eventually I'm sure he'll need more stability/structure (waiting for the other shoe to drop!) but right now we are enjoying the break.

Ironically, I have a hard time getting out on regular days. He sleeps pretty long naps and I always want to make sure he gets at least one full nap in. Then in the afternoon I am usually feeling too lazy to get out. Having the help from DH on the weekends is a big motivator for me to get going.

@yoursilverlining: WOW! Excellent work! Sounds like y'all are keeping busy!

@Raindrop: HOMG we took a trip to a pumpkin patch that was an absolute NIGHTMARE last year. It was just waaay too much to do in one day! But he was like, two months old and just couldn't be in the carseat at a red light. I was being overly ambitious.

The past 3 weekends we've spent flying/traveling and in a few weeks we'll go away for the weekend again (and then again a few weekends after that); although that's a little outside the norm ;-)

Since we both work FT, the weekend is the only time we have to get out and do family activities, so we do get out every weekend and do things like eating out at restaurants, museums, shopping, kid's activities, seeing family and friends, etc.

We try to get out every weekend and visit family for hours, go shopping, do fun activities, etc. she has gotten better about napping in the carseat, or if we are away from home at someone else's house, we bring a pack n play for her to nap in. I used to be really scared to go anywhere on the weekends because I didn't want to mess with her naps and I was so worried about over stimulating her, but it got so boring staying home all the time haha

i *need* to have more confidence in traveling with LO--so impressed that you take so many trips! i wish he fell asleep easily in the carseat--i think i would feel more comfortable taking trips if i knew that he would get some sleep while traveling.

We would not if she was more predictable with the car seat. We never know what mood she will be in.

Wow your LO sounds like a great traveler!

It depends what you call a "trip". We go out almost every weekend to do something fun with LO and a lot of times they are over an hour away. Like over the holidays we would go to pumpkin patches and tree farms which were over an hour away. None of these things were overnight night and only take up one of the days of the weekend, the other day of the weekend we totally veg at home. :)

We travel "far" probably twice a year mostly to visit family that requires a plane ride to see.

We go all the time to visit family or friends. We live so far away from so many people! We were gone every weekend in March except one, and one weekend in February. We'll be gone three weekends in May (one weekend is just a day trip, but it is to a wedding three hours away).

I think it is so important to get out with a baby. Every time I go away, my confidence increases. But it does mean that a lot of home repair things go unattended.

Oddly enough I think the reason why we are so confident as travelers is because baby had some faux health problems when he was a newborn and we had to travel to a hospital about 2 hrs. away and would stay overnight with family to make the trip less exhausting. It made us much more comfortable with traveling very quickly.
