Honestly, the ones that your vet office uses would probably suffice! I've bought clippers before at petsmart and they aren't sharp enough. Let me check he brand we use and I'll get back to you!

Fortunately walking on the sidewalk and pavement takes care of them pretty well. Occasionally I have to trim a couple and its like I'm torturing my dogs. They hate it.

Every 4 weeks, I work at a veterinary hospital so it's easy for me but when I first started doing it I was so afraid of hurting him! A good pair of clippers is essential!

Every 3-4 weeks I guess. I really don't like doing it because her nails are so strong it's very difficult and she also has long quicks and I'm worried I will get one. I much prefer to have the groomer do it, but I try to stretch out her visits.

Our dog is awful (throws a total fit) and I lack the confidence to trim black nails. I created a scratch board for her and that is used so she can file her own nails, but the results ain't pretty! I take her to the groomer, but I haven't found anyone yet who does a good job either! It does stress me out.

I used the Dremel on my last dog, but it took so long. I wish I could just clip, clip, clip and have it done with.

I do it like... every 2 months? As long as she walks on concrete, the ground naturally files them a little bit. She hates it, but I've had her for 7+ years so she has gotten used to it.

Never! He is way too skiddish, and I'm too afraid of accidentally clipping a vein. He gets groomed every 4 months though (he's a maltese/shih tzu mix), so he just gets them done then.

I tried to do it once myself and made it through one nail before vowing to take him somewhere to have it done. I was so afraid of cutting the quick and I think he could sense my nerves. He's not the kind of dog that needs to be groomed (Doxie) but I take him to the groomers once every 5-8 weeks to have it done. Totally with the $10!

@mrs. bird: As the nails grow, they shed the outside layer. They use scratching posts just to get the outside shell off their nails. It doesn't trim their nails...just makes them longer!

They're both really good at using the scratching post, but their little claws can be like hooks. When they're marching on me, their little nails feel like they're stabbing me! So, I clip them once in a while. Usually it takes a good scratch on me somewhere for me to decide it's time to clip them, lol.

@Dandelion: wow! I didn't know you needed to clip cat's claws, my cats have always scratched to do their own. My current kitty had his cut for the first time at the vet recently because his claw got stuck on the grate of his crate while we were there, I think since he's been sick he hasn't been up to doing them himself. Have you always clipped them or why did you start?

@Danizaur: I wonder how short they would shave my dog!! That would look hilarious!!!! Although our dog has SOOO much dandruff. I know that I've read that it can be just dried shampoo that you don't rinse off enough, but I really don't think it is. Because whenever we brush him, it looks disgusting with dandruff all over! (he's a chocolate lab too, so you can definitely see it)

wow, a lot less often than most of you! we only do it when we notice them getting claw-like, maybe every 3 months or so. we trimmed their nails yesterday, and that was the first time since they were at the vet (they'll do it for free if we're already there) back in late October. to be fair though, we live in the city and the concrete in the sidewalks does a pretty good job of filing their nails, even yesterday it was only the middle two nails in their front paws that were long, the rest stay pretty short.

@MrsBrewer: Lol I have a shih tzu and he has hair instead of fur. He has to go at least every 6 weeks even though I aim for every month.

I'm pretty sure you can still take a big dog in for a haircut and bath anyway! We have friends that take their big dog during the summer for a shave and a good grooming session. The groomers clean their anal glands, ears, trim their nails, and clean around their eyes.

Depends on the time of year and what he is doing! In summer I don't do him at all because I want him to have extra nail for traction for agility outdoors! We are busy enough with him at the cottage, events, walks, etc they manage themselves pretty well with exception to dew claws up front (do them every 3w or so). In the winter I try to do them as much as possible to keep the quick "up" so he is quieter on our hardwood floors!

He hates having them done, but is a good boy and rolls over for it and he lays on his back while I do all four paws!
