It was daily when we lived in NYC. But now I'm in Philadelphia and it's small enough that I just walk and bike everywhere. We walk everywhere else as DH uses our only car for work. I will really miss the public transport here when we move! We have occasionally taken a taxi after a night out but that's about it. I have never been on a city bus. The public transportation isn't convenient at all where I live, so everyone drives everywhere. I drive to work and daycare pick/up drop off and I walk almost everywhere in my town. Now that I'm getting huge and pregnant, a couple of times I have walked to the other side of town for something and gotten a taxi back, haha. The last time I got on the PATH was 3 weeks ago to meet some friends who had a conference in the city--and it had been ages since I'd done it. Can't remember the last time I was on the bus--it's been several months. I rode the ferry a few times with LO to go into the city. But we're a 1 car family because my husband takes public transport to and from work every day. Plus we always use public transit if we are going to events on weekends where parking will be spotty--sporting events, concerts, festivals/farmers' markets, etc. Much easier to navigate that way. Apart from the fact that it is more convenient, I like to use public transit because: (1) My city can have pretty bad air quality in the winter, so I like to do what I can to help. (2) It's free! My employer subsidizes public transit--all I have to do is tap my badge when I get on the train or bus. Plus if I parked at my workplace, they would charge me nearly $100/month (I work at a University so parking is at a premium!). There are less-expensive lots I could park in, but then I'd have to hop on a shuttle to get to my office, so it seems a little pointless when the (free) train drops me off right in front. (3) We are a 1-car family, and my husband's schedule is more erratic than mine, so it makes sense for him to be the one to use the car. Since I work regular business hours, it's easier for me to be the train-commuter. (4) Reading/relaxing time--I like being able to chill out and have that 45 minutes of reading time before I get home. I read so many books and I feel a lot more relaxed when I get home! There are some downsides--if I drove to work, my commute would be 10-15 minutes, but since I use public transit it's closer to 45-60. It is also a long, uphill walk to my house from the train station. On days when it's approaching 100 degrees it can be killer!!! But overall the pros outweigh the cons, so I will continue to commute this way for the foreseeable future. I take the T when we're going somewhere when it would be impossible or expensive to park or if there's a parking ban because of snow. When I lived in Spain I used the metro daily, and did the same when visiting east coast cities in the U.S., and other countries abroad that have awesome public transportation/ subway systems. But I WAH, the kids' daycare is 2 minutes away and I have like 5 grocery stores within a 10 min walk. I rarely take it unless I have to go to an appointment or if we are going somewhere on the weekend.
