They started visiting about 6 weeks after my son was born. They are having a baby in Dec so I will see how MIL acts with them, but I fear that they will think they can come over every day. This is a no no and an issue we had when we first moved here. We have set boundaries and I hope they stay in place. MIL keeps saying she wants us to be honest and say no if we don't want her to come over, but she is one of those people who says things she doesn't mean. My in-laws live 20 minutes away. They came to visit us at the hospital and once when we came home. After that they expected us to bring the baby to them out of cultural respect and what not. This was all unspoken expectations that we were unaware of. Instead we were offended that they did not want to come to our house to visit their grandson. They would rather us bring him to a restaurant that is 25 minutes away (for both us & the in-laws) just to meet up. That made no sense. Fortunately it has gotten better. My SIL babysits for us often and would relay back on my LO's new developments. They couldn't stand it anymore and made their rounds to visit. Ugh. Wish that this never had to happen in the first place. My parents come over all the time. My in laws come once a week, some times twice. Some times we go up there, it's nice to get out of the house. My parents come a lot more often. Right now we're ok with lots of visits because they're very helpful. They bring food, help with dishes, laundry, walk the dog and take him to the dog park, and help with the baby (especially nice to hold her when we eat dinner!) In terms of after giving birth, I was fine that everyone visited once I got out if the hospital. They were extra help and not an inconvenience. You're staying home with the baby anyway so I felt it was nice to have visitors drop in. Are they visiting more often now? When did the first visit start? To those of us that are pregnant, how often would you like to see your in-laws during the first few weeks? When would you feel comfortable having them visit? It's going to be awhile before we have to decide on when's best to have visitors, but I'm really curious to know what the norm is.
