He's still young at 2.5 so it's really only happened once at Target. He's done it at home plenty but in public, he is easily distracted and doesn't do it at all.

Throw himself on the floor screaming tantrums, never. But that's because when my son was small, if there was even a chance that he would do something like that (usually when he was overtired or hungry), I would just stay home...trust me, don't do that. It was soooo isolating.

In public, I'm going with monthly although it's more since she's been 35 months. Threenager to the nth degree over here. I had to carry her screaming out of a feed store last week because she didn't want to get down from a tower of chicken feed.

I voted once a month, but if we are talking full blown tantrums, I probably should have voted never (or pretty much never). I can think of a time when one DD, and I honestly can't remember for sure which one it was, totally lost her stuff about a snack in the grocery store. She was in the stroller, I was almost finished shopping, and I had to check out because I'd shopped into my stroller! I just mostly ignored it and spoke soothingly aloud, more for the benefit of other customers being able to "see" I was doing something than because I actually thought it would calm my daughter.

We definitely have our share of me having to forcibly strap an uncooperative child into a stroller to get home from an activity or the park, and that involves some degree of crying, "noodling"/going limp, thrashing, or in the case of DD2, pushing....but honestly I don't feel embarrassed by that because it's in places loaded with kids. In general, I try not to take my kids in boring errands If I don't have to, and when they do need to come, I try to choose the best times of day for all of our patience levels and the stores/doctor/whatever being less crowded.

A friend also pointed out to me recently that my kids' tantrum volume is about a five, and to that reason, she wouldn't even consider their displays to be full blown tantrum. By comparison, she says her daughter (whose behavior I actually think is very mild) tantrums at about an eleven!

I agree with the pp about it being largely personality driven. DS just isn't confrontationally defiant so he just doesn't really throw tantrums. But, we also don't try to run errands or do other things when the kids are tired or hungry, and he's usually well rested amd healthy which helps, I'm sure.
Now, DD, on the other hand, is already testing the tantrum waters at 13 months, so...😑

(FWIW for those wondering about the frequency of outings contributing, I'm a sah/wahm and have the kids out and about every day for fun outings and for all necessary errands. I actually wonder if the frequency might be lower if the kids are more accustomed to errands?)

Frequently, but I voted a week because he's in daycare full time so we don't go out in public too much. A few times a week. He tantrums when he hasn't napped or is hungry. We've had a few that lasted like 45 minutes (only about 15 minutes in public before we left and he continued.) :( I have a very strong willed boy.

@yellowbird: I totally agree with what @LBee: said. It's really personality-driven, not parenting-driven. My son is generally super chill, goes with the flow, and is pretty easily distracted. I can already tell, at 5m, that my daughter is going to much more difficult. She's much more opinionated and fussy that D was at her age. I imagine that will continue into toddlerhood and beyond (God help me in the preteen years!).

3.5 yo - probably once or twice a year. It's rare, she's usually calm. She does have whining crying moments but rarely tantrums. And if she is starting to get worked up we are outta there and head home asap.

Almost 2 yo - no epic tantrums yet although he will whine and cry when he gets bored. So we usually head out soon after.

@yellowbird: you aren't doing anything wrong!!! It's tough, but you can't compare this kind of stuff with other parents. It's so personality driven, as @twodoghouse has beautifully represented. You can parent two kids the exact same way and one can throw lots of tantrums and one not. One day that strong will is going to serve her very well!

@runnerd: strong will parents unite. He doesn't tantrum much in public, but that's just because I have the luxury of not having to do errands with him usually (perk of work out of home parent I guess).

This thread made me think of this meme:

Some of this probably has to do with how often the kid is out in public for an hour or more - for some parents it's everyday, for some it's just on the weekends or less. Also the activity, some parents can do most of their errands alone and some multiple kids are brought along for every chore that needs to be done.
Both my kids have been most unreasonable bw 1.5 - early 2. I'm not sure how often it was but it wasn't great fun but at the same time I think they both learned some lessons that have stuck with them and make parenting now a bit easier.

I didn't vote because it varies. He is 4 and we've had our fair shair of tantrums in public since he was about 18 months. I've football carried him out of many places.

Most recently (like a couple weeks ago) he threw a screaming fit in the shoe store because he was goofing off and lost the lid to his shoe box under the rack and couldn't get it. He was on the floor and it seemed to last forever but was maybe 5 minutes before I convinced him the world was not going to end if he didn't have the lid to his box.

One time when he was 3.5 and just potty trained we went to Target. He had to go to the bathroom but refused to wash his hands and started screaming. I finally just picked him up and carried him out. My husband said everyone could hear him screaming. It was awful and then we spent about 20 minutes just trying to get him in his car seat (he wanted to go back into Target and started throwing a fit about that).

Just better comment to make the other parents of tantrum-throwing, strong-willed children feel better! :) can't believe all these never responses! Probably around 18mo it was weekly, now it's probably every 3 weeks at 2 yr old. (Only because we've gotten better at our snack distractions and bribe game)

@twodoghouse: mine aren't twins, and the baby is only six months, but it's already so interesting to see just how different their personalities are. I can only imagine seeing them side by side like twins. You are also giving me hope that maybe my more chill baby will continue to be a chill toddler than big sister.

I voted once a month, but thinkig about it more, maybe once a week is more accurate for DD. DS rarely has problems in public, but if we are anywhere for too long, DD will melt down. I make it my goal to watch for the signs and get her into the car and on the way home before things get really bad. If we are doing anything that might run into naptime, bedtime, or mealtime we are guaranteed a breakdown from DD, so I just do my best to avoid messing with her schedule too badly. Off the top of my head, she's had meltdowns at soccer, the zoo, a family members' house, another zoo, the dr office, and a coffee shop in the last week. But she was sick with a cold this week so that certainly didn't help! We're pretty sure this is just DD's personality. She feels everything very strongly and has since the day she was born! It's so interesting to see the differences between DD and DS (twins) because one is very easy going and one is...not.

@PawPrints: @Bubbles: We practice RIE too, and it definitely doesn't mean zero tantrums for us! It does help DH and I react to the meltdowns, though.

@PawPrints: we do our best to practice RIE too - but I think for us at this stage that means more tantrums! (Though usually v quickly moved on from) As he is generally encouraged to let out his feelings, and there is no way I will use bribery or give him his own way to avoid a tantrum! He's a fiery little guy though 😉

I'm amazed how many people are on the lower/never end! I picked once a week - although for us 2-3 minutes would be a very long one. He usually moves on pretty quickly. Although I do remember one particular occasion going well over 30 mins! He's 2.5.

Never thrown a tantrum, only 15 months though. We will see what the future holds. We're trying very hard to practice RIE though so fingers crossed that groundwork will pay off in fewer tantrums down the road.
