Never. He was always a pretty timid dog who never strayed far from us, even off-leash. He's gone completely blind in the last year and sticks to the places he knows, which is the back patio and the first floor of our house. He is too scared to do stairs so I don't even have to worry about him going to the second floor. The only way out of the back patio is to the garage (we are in a townhouse) and since that is always closed (and he wouldn't climb the stairs anyways) there's no way he can escape. It has turned out to be the perfect setup for our blind pup!!

A couple of times in 5 years. Once we left the backyard fence gate open and one time a worked did. The first time she was a puppy and we didn't know she was missing 'til someone knocked on our door with her! The second time she didn't go far and was hanging around.

Never anymore. We finally double fenced our existing fence. :) I'm so glad it's done. Our dog had a couple lost/found incidents and it was so stressful. Nice people and oddly enough a FB post let me know of her location in another town, within 10 minutes. We even had to tie her up for awhile which was sad for me.

A few times as a puppy and when we've moved. We used to both be really long distance runners and would run in the woods. I got a bit turned around one time when I stopped to tie my shoe and was visiting family and had to call dh. Our dog just kept going till he got home.

Once. I let her out back to do her business and had to deal with the other dog. Dog #1 decided to go for a walk down the street. Thankfully a neighbor called her and she came to him and he held her until I got there.

We have a lot of this in our old neighborhood. Dogs that get out regularly. I feel people who have dogs that get out regularly just aren't good pet parents. If your dogs jump fences, don't leave them in the backyard without you there. Same with diggers. Leash and walk. You got the pet, they're your responsibility, not your neighborhood's responsibility.

Never, we have no fence and he is often laying in the middle of our front yard people watching. He's a good boy, people and dogs walk by and he doesn't move, just enjoys sitting and keeping an eye on things. As needed we tell people to leave him alone when they come onto our lawn, lol.

We need a fence for the kids more than him!

We have no leash laws in our town and dogs regularly roam free throughout the neighborhood. It's a very quiet street so at busiest times there may be 5-10 cars an hour, otherwise we can go hours without seeing a car. Our yard isn't fenced and he's usually pretty good about staying on our property, but every now and then he goes explore and comes back after 30-40 minutes.

Aside from when we let them off leash on purpose (our park allows dogs off leash before 9am; they never go more than like 10 ft from us) -- my older dog has never; my younger bolted out of my dad's hands during a walk when she got spooked . She ran home to our apt building and someone caught her there but it was really scary bc she crossed a pretty major NYC street!

Never. He has too much anxiety to run off, even when presented with the opportunity. Case in point: took my girls to the park with the nanny for an hour last week. Neither the nanny and I are sure who left last, but whoever did, did not close the front door securely. We came home and it was half open, due to the wind. Any other dog would have run off, but nope, not ours! He was hiding in the corner 🙄 At least I didn't worry about anyone being in the house (we still did a thorough check) because he would have let us know!

About twice a year? I honestly even hate to say he gets loose. We have a mostly fenced yard but there's a passage behind our garage into the neighbor's yard, over the summer it's pretty grown over so it seems like every year in late fall he realizes it's open again and he goes over to inspect. He also went over once this summer the day after they had a huge cookout because he thought he was on clean up duty and he helped himself to a few errant leftovers... I couldn't even blame him for wanting free hot dogs.

That being said, he's mostly border collie and very home centric so he can sit on our front porch for hours watching everything and he'll never move. He won't even get up to greet the mailman. He's also super friendly so we aren't too concerned.

We have lived in our apartment for 3 years and our dog has gotten out of the backyard without our knowledge once. The yard is fenced in, but apparently there was a small space he was able to squeeze himself through to get underneath the porch, and from there a loose board he nudged aside to get out. It took me a good 30 minutes to find him and it was some of the worst minutes of my life because all I could picture was him having been hit by a car. Luckily he came back toward home and I nabbed him just around the corner. After that we went over the yard and fencing inch by inch and reinforced anything we even thought he could somehow bypass. He was still a puppy actually the time he escaped, and there have been a couple times since then either DH or I have forgotten to close the gate and not realized it until the dog was out, but luckily the dog knows now not to leave the yard.

Never. We just let him loose in our yard (we have a pretty big lot, no fence though) and he never goes beyond our property. He's a lazy English bulldog though and they tend to stick pretty close to home. He mainly just does this thing then lies on the back deck in the sun.

He's never gotten loose. In our apartment our front yard was actually fenced in which was nice (I still went outside with him every time though, I didn't trust people walking up the street).

Now that we have a house our backyard isn't fenced so we take him out on a leash and walk with him or put him on a 30 ft leash in the yard. We never leave him outside without us though. Once we have a fence I'll start letting him out by himself. I'm overprotective of my dog.

my lab mix is stuck to me like glue. even with the the gates or doors open he's never more than 5 ft from me. and he actually has a really good recall when we've taken him to dog parks and dog beaches.

my parents/childhood dog was a known escape artist and would get loose all the time. It was rough because he wasnt chipped and rarely wore a collar. He was picked up by animal control at the shore, one day we found him at our towns police station, we frequently had to chase him down our street, or coerce him in with promises of milk, lunch meat or rides in the car. If anyone is familiar with the breed he was shiba inu and its a pretty common trait for them.

We have lived in our home for 5 years and our dogs have gotten out twice. The first time was right after we moved in. There was a hole under the fence that we didn't know about until they dug it out a little more and went on an adventure. The second was a couple days ago. I didn't close the gate all the way behind me. I didn't realize it because my hands were full with the baby and it was raining. Luckily DH came home not too long after I did and saw our dog in the neighbors yard.

My dogs like to be outside so as long as the weather is good I'll let them hang out back there as much as they want. I'm glad they aren't escape artists because I would hate to keep them inside all the time.

It's only happened once for us. We have a fenced in back yard, but we have idiot kids that live near us, and torment our poor dogs when they are outside :-( Well one time when we let our dogs out (I didn't notice right away) but our back gate leading into our alley was open. I'm not saying it was the kids, but someone went and opened the gate without our knowledge....Luckily after I didn't see them in the backyard 5 or so minutes after letting them out, I ran outside into the alley, and there was an older gentlemen telling our 2 dogs to "go home" hahaha once they saw me, they immediately ran into the yard!

Never. Our backyard is fenced, and if she's out front with us she's tied up. We take her hiking off leash but she doesn't wander more than a few feet away. I'd be devastated if anything happened to her, so we are pretty careful.

Spin-off on the other thread.

How often does your dog get loose?

When we lived in an apartment (with no yard), my dog ran after a squirrel once and I dropped the leash. From that point on, I made sure the leash was always secured on my hand.

Now that we live in a house with a fenced in yard, our one dog got out once when the landscaper left the door to our yard wide open. Otherwise, our backyard keeps the dogs in. Luckily, if I'm outside with them and I drop the leash, they don't run. Well, as long as they don't see something.
