My baby is 4.5 months - almost 5 now. I had the same question too because sometimes he just doesn't seem hungry. I still follow the advice from the baby whisperer book which says 2.5 to 3 hours. Then we went to the lactation consultant asking the same question, and she said if your baby doesn't want to eat or isn't hungry, it is ok to go 3-4 hours. At night we do not wake him to eat - if he wakes then I feed him 1 time.

So basically during the day time we feed 5 times, and at night he would usually wake and eat 1 more time.

@Coco Bee: I'm still feeding on demand and it's around 2 to 3 to 3.5 hours. It's definitely hard to tell whether my LO is hungry or not because he's also been sucking on his hands a whole lot (oral stage). I also notice some days he seems to be content going longer hours (3-4 hours) before the next feeding. Btw, I posted a question on your wall :)

For more information on directed feeding (you don't need to take all the advice) I recommend Baby Wise or the Baby Whisperer. They get some bad raps but they have the kind of information you are looking for.

As far as his weight as long as he keeps on a curve, he is fine. Our little guy went from the 50% to the 0.5% so we freaked out.

@cvbee: yeah, I say I FOD too, but like I said, he's so mellow he never acts like he's starving or needs to eat so he could easily go 4+ hours if I didn't initiate feedings. Since he's only 25th percentile for weight, I figure I should direct feedings more frequently.

I have no idea and I scoured The Baby Book by Dr. Sears and it doesn't have any type of feeding schedule on it.

My mom just said, "when he's hungry" - well d'oh! But sometimes he doesn't show signs of hunger, or he takes long naps or we're out and about and it's been longer than I realize and he was content to sleep/watch/observe. He has gone as long as 4 hours during the day between feedings, but usually I TRY to feed him ever 2-3 hours. That's how often I fed him as a NB though. How often do you feed your 4 mos old?
