Oh man, I'm not even close to a get germaphobe but I cannot handle dirty sponges/dishrags. I just can't. The rag gets changed daily or every other day.

I have no idea how often, just when it gets icky and the scrubby side isn't scrubby anymore it gets pitched and I'll pull a new one from the drawer

Oh wow... I guess probably not often enough. We mostly use the dishwasher so we probably only throw the sponge out about once every month or so.

I will have to give the microwave trick a try, never heard of that before

Every month or two usually. Or when I notice it getting grungy... MIL crochets our sponges and gives us an ample supply of them! :)

I cook, so my husband washes the dishes. I pretty much throw it out when it looks gross to me, so at least once a month (otherwise it would probably grow legs and walk away on its own). He's pretty good about rinsing dishes right away and putting the dishes into the dishwasher, so we don't use it super often.

We use a rag and change it out (throw the old one in the laundry basket) every couple days. Sponges scare me because they are just bacteria growing machines!

@stbhismrs - great idea! i'll try that one day. when i get around to it. haha.

wow, every week or 2. that's often. i'm probably like @autumnlove haha. about every 2 months when the sponge looks gross. or maybe longer. i tend to use the dishwasher more often now so.....

i heard you could microwave the sponge for 2 minutes and it'll kill the bacteria. i tried that once. it was interesting. i recommend doing it while it's wet.

@Boogs - We do that too. They don't come out brand new or anything, but at least it seems cleaner, so I don't feel like I'm just smearing the germs around on the countertop.

I throw it in the dishwasher to sanitize it every time I run it. That keeps it from stinking a little longer, so I toss them maybe every 3 weeks?

I use a wash cloth, and wash it about once a week. We have a dishwasher, so I don't really use it except to wash the counters off.

I have heard that to kill the germs in your sponge though, you dampen it, roll it loosely in a paper towel and microwave it. Its supposed to kill the bacteria and "clean" it.
