I pretty much throw it out when it looks gross to me, so at least once a month (otherwise it would probably grow legs and walk away on its own). He's pretty good about rinsing dishes right away and putting the dishes into the dishwasher, so we don't use it super often. That keeps it from stinking a little longer, so I toss them maybe every 3 weeks? We have a dishwasher, so I don't really use it except to wash the counters off. I have heard that to kill the germs in your sponge though, you dampen it, roll it loosely in a paper towel and microwave it. Its supposed to kill the bacteria and "clean" it.
