@Foodnerd81: I usually stay on the ground. It has a sandbox underneath and he is almost always in that as opposed to being up top. I like to be close when he is on the stairs.

@T.H.O.U.: tree roots and hard stuff, correct. That's a good idea. I don't think that would be too hard to do.

Also what's under the fort if he were to fall? I assume tree roots and hard stuff? At least under the ladder could you put a couple inches of mulch? There is an equation for how many inches of mulch per feet of height you should have.

Also knowing my kid, the ladder will be her favorite part anyway.

@Mrs. Champagne: do you go up and play with him or can you just supervise from the bottom?

My son is 2.5 and plays in one. It has stairs instead of a ladder and he can't fall out unless he fell down the stairs. Which I am terrified he will do so we need to add railings.

With a modified railing and no windows she could fall out of, I'd say now! With supervision, of course (from the ground, not necessarily an adult up in the tree house). I think the only tricky thing is getting down - I feel like lots of kids can get up a ladder securely before they are comfortable climbing down one. You could add a slide for easy exit, but that's one more fall risk I suppose!

What age would you feel comfortable with you r LO playing in a tree house? Our new house has a really cool tree house, which is structurally sound (we had the home inspector check it) but definitely my safe for a3 year old as is (there is a railing but the openings are definitely big enough for a toddler to fall through).

I figure she is definitely too young now. But 4? 5? We can modify it by adding a better railing for younger kids but I'm not sure what age to expect her to be able to use it.

Eta: it's built into the tree and about 7 feet off the ground. There is a ladder up to it, and a grown man can walk underneath it, to give an idea on size.
