I still wear DS1 who is 27+ pounds at 21 months and I'm 39 weeks pregnant. Definitely not too late to start, lol.

Ahhhh I bit the bullet and bought an Ergo today! Hope I love it, that was kind of a rash move!

I have a big baby (7 months- 20 lbs) and he loves to be worn. I have a Tula and it doesn't hurt my back in the slightest. I anticipate wearing him for at least another year or two.

I started late but it didn't last more than a couple months. That has more to do with my LO though. She learned to crawl and then didn't want to be in the stroller, much less worn.

Recommend just going with the Ergo as it was best for my back and shoulders, and I have a 11kg baby at a year old who I have to carry around cuz we live in a big city and don't drive.

@NurseMommy: Yeah, it's been intermittent for us until we figured out what worked best. We started with an Infantino and a Moby- the Moby was great for a few months, the Infantino just plain sucked. I also used a HotSling and a 7 Sling from 3-6 months, and both were nice and good for house cleaning and chores, I just usually forgot them when out and about.

After a few months we stopped until we got the Ergo at almost a year. We did wear him in a frame backpack while hiking and while I was working, but I definitely prefer the closeness of the Moby, slings, and Ergo. I REALLY love the security and structure of the Ergo.

Not too late at all, DD is 10 months and we wear her all the time and don't see that stopping anytime soon.

Baby Bjorn is hella uncomfortable (for the wearer and the wearee) so don't let that experience sway you from babywearing! Ergo is a great one, easy to find and pretty comfortable.

Nope! We finally got an Ergo at 11 months- wish I had done it sooner, but I pulled off not quite another year of wearing him before I got too big pregnancy-wise to wear him. Definitely planning on wearing #2 from the start!

@brownie: thanks for the tips!
@Greentea: my lo likes the stroller but I hate it - especially right now because there is SO. MUCH. SNOW. and it's all melting so to get the stroller through the slush is torture.
@Weagle: thank you, I'll look into those things. Lol I'm not sure I want a "gateway drug" - you're making me nervous that this is something I'm going to end up spending a ton of money on. Also our LOs are opposites - mines a little pudge - 50% weight, 8% height. Lol

@NurseMommy: Check the Babywearing International page to see if there are any groups in your area. You can go to a meetings a try on tons of carriers to see what fits you best. Or natural baby stores usually have carriers and babywearing classes. There's a FB group called Babywearing on a Budget, and I'm seeing some good deals in The Babywearing Swap (also on FB). I think a good "gateway drug" is the Tula or Kinderpack. The standard size is bigger than an Ergo or Beco or Boba. My 20 month old still fits well in the standard size. For reference, she's in the 25-30% in weight and 75-80% in height.

No I think she will love it! DD was worn by DH constantly until 3 mo. when she was just too long for the ergo infant insert but too little to go without it... So now at 7 mo. I started wearing her again and she loves it. She hates the stroller and just makes us hold her when we go anywhere anyway...

@Weagle: whoa. By the time I figure out what to do it will definitely be too late to start! Hopefully I can figure it out before lo#2s arrival in about two years. :silly:

Is there a cheap way to do it? Or am I going to end up buying 18 different things?

I (and my husband) still wear or almost 3 year old and I suspect we will until he is 5 or 6. Now, he is only 25 pounds which helps. We have a Beco which I love but the Ergo is much better for bigger kids and I am hoping to get a Tula Toddler now that he is so big and I know we will continue.

BUT there is not yes or no or hard and fast rules. I hate the stroller so I made him get used to the baby wearing. I know a lot of parents that love the stroller and hate baby wearing.

SO for you, I would recommend an Ergo carrier. It is fairly easy to learn and will last for a while. Though if you can try a few carriers (Beco, Boba, Ergo, Tula are some of the most common) you can pick your own favorite.

@NurseMommy: haha... It is like a foreign language!
SSC = soft structured carrier (Ergo, Beco, Tula...)
RS = ring sling
WCRS = wrap conversion ring sling = a sling made from a woven wrap
Woven wraps = wraps made specifically for carrying babies, not stretchy like a Moby.

Not too old! People still wear into the 3rd year and beyond. I still wear my 20 month old fairly regularly. Not as much as before, but pretty often.

ETA: At that age we both loved a SSC. Crawling was still a novelty, so a quick "up" was easiest for us. We also loved RSs then too. My faves are a Tula and any WCRS done by Sleeping Baby Productions. There are a number of wrappers on the board that can tell you more about that.

...to start babywearing?
LO is eight months. We have a Baby Bjorn that we use occasionally but I really hate the damn thing - it's soooo hard on my back and shoulders. I'm very interested in starting some babywearing, but not constantly, mostly just for walks with the dog cuz our stroller also sucks. Is it worth it to start? If so, how do I start? What should I try?
