Never! I still have my stuffed dog. He's not in the bed but in our closet. DS is obsessed with his puppy. I think it's cute.

For sleep, not worried about it. For outside, I'm hoping my dd will stop taking her doggy to school by 3.5...but since starting school and having a new baby she has become very attached to it!

My lovey is a huge blanket my grandma made me when I was born. I just woke up from a bed that has my lovey on top of our comforter. :silly: I'm 32.

Eta we try to limit ds' a+a security blankets to sleep time only or when he's sick.

@kitty: a lot of the kids in my daughter's preschool brought a lovey during the adjustment period - they're all between 3 and 4.5 years. I was surprised but relieved, since DD is very attached to her Doggie. She takes him some days, but he has to stay in her backpack.

I'm trying to keep DD's lovey as a toy that doesn't leave the house (that had always been the rule before), but as DD1 gets used to drop off classes and being on her own, I've relented a bit. dD2 doesn't really ask to bring hers out.

I got rid of my blankie when we got married ;)

My personal feeling is after age 5 it needs to stay at home or in the bed. My son is obsessed with his angel dear and he's 3.5. It stays home or in the car though he does have one in his backpack for school for if he needs it.

I'll never take away DD's loveys, and I don't have a problem with her bringing them in the car (but not into stores, restaurants, etc). My parents told me that my lovey, a ratty old baby blanket, fell apart in the wash when I was 4 or 5. It was pretty traumatic for me, and even though I eventually "got over it," I never forgot it. There aren't many parenting decisions my parents made that I disagree with, but that was definitely one. Plus they lied, the blankie didn't die in the wash...they actually still have it.

I think when they start at preschool they are too old to take the lovey with them but maybe having it in bed is ok. My mum took mine away when I was about 4 ans I remember wanting it back but eventually moving on. My dad gave it back to me when I got married 3 ywars ago! Haha

I hope this post didn't come off as judgemental! Now that I think of it, I got a stuffed dolphin when I was 12 and slept with it in the crook of my arm until I was packing up for college. And I definitely see that it might only become a problem if it's taken out of the house and has the potential to be lost.

I don't think I would ever take one away all together.

That being said - my 3 year old knows that her burp cloth that serves as her lovey stays in her room or in the car if a trip is during night / nap time. She knows that she can always go to her room to "rest" with her lovey if she needs that comfort.

I can't really picture myself weaning my kid off their lovey or taking it away from them, but I would probably put limits on when/where they can have it. Like "nope, you can not bring it to this wedding we're going to!" But at home and especially for bedtime, sure, they can probably keep it for as long as they want.

My older brother convinced me to throw my lovey away when I was little!! My mom rescued it from the trash in case I wanted it back, but I apparently never asked for it, so she eventually threw it away again.
