My LO is 3 months and he naps 4 times a day (5 if they are all 30 minutes). I try to be very mindful of his wake times and to put him down in his crib after 1-1.5 hours from his last nap. Total nap time ranges from 3-5.5 hours.

I also think 3 hours is too long to be up before bedtime but If your LO isn't cranky/fussy by that hour and goes down easy at bedtime then it may be ok. I've read that the max wake time for a 4 month old is 1.75-2 hours. We do a super early bedtime because our babe won't take an evening nap. He is in bed by 6:30 at the latest and wakes twice to eat over 13-ish hours.

My 14 month old still occasionally takes 3 naps/day on weekends (on weekdays he is at daycare and will take one long nap at daycare, and sometimes a short nap on the way home or shortly after we get home). I think your LO's sleep schedule sounds pretty good, actually. Re: sleeping through the night, some kids seem to get the hang of it quickly and others take a while... my LO didn't sleep more than 3 hours at a time at night (so we're talking an average of 3 night wakings) till he was 7 months old. We didn't really do strict sleep training, but we worked on trying to let him do more self-soothing, and having better sleep habits, and around 11 months he started going down at 7:30 and sleeping all the way through till 6-6:30 AM.

My baby is almost 4 months as well and takes 3-4 naps during the day. His nap times are around the same as yours (maybe a difference of half an hour or so) and he naps anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. He tends to take one long nap around 4-5ish and I've woken him up once or twice because he usually has his bath around 730-8ish and in his crib by 830. He is also exclusively breastfed and wakes at least once a night. I also long for a baby who can sleep 8+ hours straight but I realize that when he sleeps longer (7.5 has been the most), I still need to get up and pump.

Your baby is still young, so I don't think he's napping too much at all. My LO is 13 months old and on a good day will take 2 naps.

Mine naps longer in the late afternoon, and goes to bed later in the evening, but other than that ours have very similar routines.

At 5 months (EBF) he mostly sleeps through the night, usually only wakes me up once a week during the night (he seems to know the days I have to work, and gets me up then). Maybe give it some more time?

Also my pediatrician said to let him sleep as long as he wants, not to wake him up for feedings. I usually just make sure that he is awake around 2 hours before I want to put him to bed. Other than that, I just follow the signals he gives me and don't worry about the clock.

@irene: my pediatrician never said that! Sometimes my LO (not consistently, though maybe once a week) will take a 3 hour nap a day!

His sleep patterns sound almost identical to my son who is 3 months old. He takes 3, sometimes 4 naps a day. And like your LO, he usually has only one long nap a day, and the rest are 30-45 minute naps. He is happy, content and seems well-rested so I won't mess with a good thing.

Also - my son totally has a "pre-bedtime nap" just like yours! It can be as short as 20 minutes, and it usually around 5-6pm, as he goes to sleep at 7:30-8pm

He also can only stay awake for 1.5-2 hours, but if he had a short nap sometimes he can only be awake for an hour before he's tired again. Only once has he ever stayed awake for three hours inbetween naps.

@irene: a longer nap is having the first and third nap be at least an hour long.

i know you are stressed about your baby's sleep, but it sounds like he is a pretty good sleeper! you can also work with a sleep consultant. this is one we talked to before sleep training charlie:

http://www.nycsleepdoctor.com/

she will write out a sleep training plan for you, and answer any and all questions you have during and after.

your baby is still young, and may drop that wake-up on his own in the coming months. but staying up 3 hours is too long at that age. you could try moving bedtime a little earlier? that often helps.

How long is a "longer nap"? Our pediatrician told us to not let the baby nap for longer than 2 hours in 1 stretch....

The 4 nap is completely optional - sometimes we'd put him down and he won't nap. However if we don't put him down he would just passed out after staying up for 3 hours from 3:30pm (time he wakes up from his 3rd nap) to 6:30 pm (time to do the last nursing of the day)

If he isn't napping too much during the day, then I really don't know why he isn't sleeping through the night. Sigh.

I think that sounds about right for where we were at that age. Even now at 10 months shes taking 2 longer naps.

I can't say much for STTN because mine is EBF too and still gets up about once.

i don't think your baby is napping too much. in fact even charlie was sleeping 15 hours a day until recently.

when your lo drops the third nap depends on when he can stay awake longer between naps, and that varies for every baby. he probably won't be able to stay up more than 2 hours between naps until he is 6 months.

for charlie, he dropped from 3 naps to 2 at 9 months, which is average, and his naps were a little longer in duration than your lo's. ideally your lo would take 3 longer naps a day and drop that short 4th nap.

Your LO's napping sounds pretty good to me - but ideally, his naps could be longer. But three naps/day sounds good to me.

My LO is 10 months old and she has two naps a day...And occasionally a third nap (but it's rare).

I am curious to know how much your babies are napping, and if mine is napping too much.
To begin let me report mine:

Baby's Age: Almost 4 months
# of naps: 3-4
Total of nap time @ day: Around 3-4 hours

Wake time: 7:15am (He usually wakes earlier but we let him chill in his crib until 7:15am if he's not crying)
Nap 1: 9am (30 mins - 1 hour)
Nap 2: 11:15am (Usually 1.5-2 hours)
Nap 3: 2:30pm (30 -45 mins)
Nap 4: 5:30pm (15 mins, optional. He doesn't need this usually, but if we don't put him down for 15 minutes he'd fall asleep at my boob before bedtime and it will be a pain to nurse him that one last time)
Sleep: 7:00pm

He is exclusively breastfed and doesn't sleep through the night :-( He wakes 1-2 times randomly between 12-6am. Most of the time if I don't feed him he doesn't go back to sleep on his own. Therefore I don't know if we are letting him nap too much or what's the deal. I am just dying to have one of those babies who sleeps through the night, and I do know people whose babies sleeps 12 hours a night without making a peep.

What do you guys think? Also, when do we cut down 3 naps to 2, and how do you do it?
