@mediagirl: I bet she does know what they mean and I bet she actually knows what a lot more words mean, but just can't say them yet! I can see Liam's mind working sometimes when I talk - he knows what I'm saying, but just can't respond yet. For example, he points to the sky when he hears an airplane. If we say airplane, he points to the sky. He definitely knows what the word means, he just can't say it yet!

@Mrs. Twine: I tend to agree with you on this. My son is speech delayed but is quickly catching up. He also has advanced math & literacy skills but I see that some of his friends are starting to catch up to him. So it's starting to all even out as time progresses. By the time they're all 5 or 6, I doubt we'll be able to tell who the late talkers/early readers were. I was a super early talker and my brother was a late talker (didn't really say much until he was 2.5). He's a computer engineer and definitely smarter than me. You just never know!

She's 10 months old so I don't know how much she understands but she says

Dada - She says it a lot towards the end of the day before DH gets home so I think she does know
Mama - She used to only say this when upset but now she looks at me sometimes and says it
Hi - She understands this when we say it to her so I think she does get it

My daughter is 22 months. She knows too many to count at this point. She picks up a new word everyday. It's been a lot of fun since we didn't experience toddler talk with my son when he was her age.

Dada
Mama (only when upset)
Bubu (bye)
And the other night we got bubbb from her (bubble) :)

Ps...I doubt she really knows what these words really mean but they are fun to hear.

@Mrs. Tictactoe; One cool thing I have learned and really believe is that words at this age is less indicative of intelligence and has more to do with learning style. Ellie is very smart and she had about one word at Lorelei's age (bup for up, which I should add to Lorelei's list, too, come to think of it) because that just wasn't what she was working on at the time. Lorelei will just repeat whatever we say and after once or twice she will have that word in her vocabulary. I know I used to feel so bad (and really jealous sometimes) of parents who had really precociously verbal little ones! It's just like motor skills, though, or early reading-- it will all even out before too long and you would never know that Lorelei was an "early" talker. I love that your son makes truck sounds-- that is too awesome!

Lorelei will be 14 months on the 23rd. She says:
kitty-kitty
sock
balloon
frog
shoe
velcro
light
lamp
ball
hat
hello
bye-bye
grandpa
please
pup (for dog)
raccoon
chick
outside
pool
bee
cricket
row-row (for row row row your boat)
dock (for her hickory dickory dock book)
book
eat
tractor
truck
car
go
bird
egg
chocolate
cake
ice cream
cupcake
cheese
swing
slide
bubble
foot
cup (usually she means my water bottle)
Lots of animal sounds... I know I'm missing some words , and obviously they are not all perfectly clear to strangers (though most would be understood by a stranger at least). Ellie was pretty seriously speech delayed so it has been so strange to me to have such a talker this time. As strange as it sounds, I still worry sometimes about her language development, even though she is doing just fine. With Ellie I did signing and she did have quite a few words in her signed vocabulary at that age. With Lorelei she has seemed more interested in the words themselves, so we skipped signing almost entirely.

mmmmmm - food/drink or more food/drink

She is also a big fan of pointing at exactly what she wants and babbles all day long. Those are the words I can pick out from her babbles.

Wow. What advanced babies you all have! My daughter is 13.5 months. She talks *all* the time, but most of it is jargon babble (i.e. she sounds like she's talking in a made up language). Then again, maybe I'm just not paying close enough attention b/c a number of people have told me they think she has more words than I give her credit for.

Words that I think she has down are:
Die-ee (Hi and bye)
Duck
Dat (That, or what's that?)

I also think she might know daddy and mama, but she doesn't necessarily use them correctly. She usually uses the words Daddyaddyaddyah and Daddyum around DH, so I think those might both mean dad to her. She'll cry mama when she's distressed too.

In fact, we just came back from the ENT today to discuss putting tubes in.... we'll discuss again after he's done with this round of antibiotics (20 days, for yet another ear infection)

DD is 10.5 months old and she says 3 words, all meaning the same thing. Her favorite word is hej. She says it whenever she sees a stuffed animal or anything with a face for that matter.

Hej (Swedish for hi)

20 months, and she has about 300 words, maybe? She's all about adjectives and different verb tenses lately, which is so cool to see.

@regberadaisy: Yeah, LO only says mama when she's crying and wants me but she says dada when DH walks through the door. She has a nanny share with a baby who's 4-months older so I know some of the words, like "ba" for ball come from being around her all day.

LO only has about 3 and she is almost 13 months.. She consistently says dada and sometimes mama (only when she is pissed and wants me!) and baby

@mrsjazz: wow! I am so impressed!!!
