I think it depends hugely on the child. My 2 year old has days when he listens and days when he is defiant. So it would be hit or miss with him.

If lo was sitting in my lap I would let him try now at 18 months. Without directly being held I would think it would depend on the kid. For one who follows directions and is cautious/not impulsive I would think it would be sooner than a child who had less self control.

I think it depends on the kid. I know some super-excitable 5 year olds that I wouldn't trust.

Supervised, probably 2.5, like yours. Especially if older kids are around, cause youngers tend to try to be like them.

@Snowdrop: You're totally right on the dangers of cooking marshmallows! I forgot that we had them cook little hot dogs with their sticks. We cooked the marshmallows ourselves later on... edited the post accordingly!

We would let the scouts who were 12-14 at the time cook them unsupervised. The danger comes when they learn to heat them up without burning and go too far as they can slide down the stick. Molten, sticky marshmallows can cause quite a bad burn!

Oh just realised you said supervised not unsupervised! We had four year old beavers doing that and some younger kids but with an adult's hand on top of theirs as they cam't seem to hold them steady yet.

We went camping this summer, when the kids were 4 1/2 and 2 1/2. We built a campfire, and gave our eldest a long stick to use to cook little hot dogs. We went over the safety rules and supervised him closely, and he was totally safe the whole time. 4 1/2 felt like a good age to let him cook hot dogs while supervised.

Our 2 1/2 year old also wanted to copy her brother, and so we gave her a stick as well and watched her oh so closely. We gave her and her brother a chair, and put it as far as we could from the fire (the sticks were pretty long). I was surprised that she was as good as her brother at staying safe! I would never have thought a 2 1/2 year old could cook a hot dog on a campfire. I think a big part of it was that her brother was modeling safe behavior, and she likes to imitate him.

How old should a kid be to safely cook hot dogs on a campfire (while under close supervision)?
