Ugh. I don't know how long he had been trying for but he figured it out at 18 months. So now we have the front rail off his crib and a twin bed in there trying to transition. It could be worse but it hasn't been fun either.

@swurlygurl: @birdofafeather: I know, right?! Twins seem to be overrepresented in crib climbing :) And the baby putting the crib side back up cracked me up!

@Smurfette: He's always been an active climber, so if R loves to climb, you may be right. None of our friends have had their LO's climb out, but one kiddo just isn't very limber, and the others are more timid/cautious in general.

But it hasn't been an issue keeping him in when we put him down for bed since we have a video monitor and have made it clear that bed/naptime is not an option. He only climbs out when it's time to get up, which I don't mind, though I'd rather him not be climbing out at all for safety reasons.

He started trying around 14 months, and figured it out by 18. He now climbs out of the crib whenever he's up for the day or done with his nap. He can also climb into his crib.

We're in the market for a twin bed, though.

Ahh it explains a lot then. Wonder why they don't have them in the US. Here most parents just take out the bars at some point.

@Pumuckl: wow! that's pretty cool....I wish cribs here in the US were made that way, seems like it would be a pretty easy way to keep toddlers from trying to climb over while still keeping them in the crib (unless there are some made in the US and I don't know about it?)

LO is 18 months and (knock on wood) has not even attempted to climb out. Which is a little surprising since she is quite the daredevil and climber in general.

@lawbee11: I think that would be more dangerous cause she would have her feet free and would think she can do it and would try even harder.
Right now it isn't a daily thing so I am not going to worry about it too much. We can always take off the springs and put the mattress directly on the floor too, so she will be even lower and harder to get out of.

DS is 2.5 years and has sort of thrown his leg up a couple of times (that I've seen) but hasn't really tried yet. He is very cautious.

@septca: I had the same thought - but I saw a video on youtube that included a baby that had to be less than 1 escaping from her crib! It was impressive. And scary.

@Smurfette: I wonder if one of the early walker sleep sacks would be the best of both worlds? She'd be able to walk without tripping but it looks it'd still be difficult for her to lift her leg up in one.

My DS climbed out at 18 months - It was one of those nights where he did NOT want to go to bed and he was screaming - I put him in the crib and left.

A few minutes later the crying stopped and I heard a thug - I went to check on him and he was standing at his door with a huge smile on his face!

I put him back in the crib and he never climbed out again until he was 3yrs old.

@septca: they just kind of hoist themselves up there and put their feet on the rail - kind of like climbing a tree - when your determined to get out of the crib you find a way :silly:

Another stupid question. How do they even get out? I have a crib identical to the one @Pumuckl: posted (minus the missing bars), and there is no way DD is tall enough to swing her leg over the side.

Now this may seem like a stupid question from a European but why are they only able to get out when they climb? Here the cribs all have two or three bars that can be taken out so the kids can get out of the cribs but still have the snug feeling the crib gives them. I'll include a picture of what I mean. Are cribs in the US made differently?

[attach=4925/14/n5k6w9.250x202.bed.jpg]

It seems so dangerous when they have to climb.

@Smurfette: Yes but she HATES it. We basically keep her in it with a sleepsack and we have to put it on back to front because she figured out how to take it off and I woke up to find her straddling the top of the crib. She actually still sleeps in our room but we're hoping to transition her into her own room soon, onto a floor bed. I'm pretty terrified of what she could get up to without bars keeping her in - she can climb onto the dining room table too. Sigh.
