First night away from home? 10 days. And many more after that, including lots of long car trips. First flight wasn't until 5 months, though.

IMO, the older they get, the harder it is ... I miss the sleepy days!

@MegWag: spot on! the flight at 6 months was no big deal, I was more nervous, but the last flight at 12 months was worse, especially since he wanted to walk around, which I hate to let him do!

We're planning to fly from the UK to Texas when our son is about 5 mos. old so he can meet his great-grandparents and other extended family. I'm not too worried about it. I think it'll be harder once he's older and wanting to be mobile.

We took our first car trip when she was 2 months old. We purposely left at her bedtime so we didn't throw her schedule off too much. She was such a champ! We were so happy that even with 5 1/2 hours in a car she still stayed on schedule, and slept through the night!

3 months. We were living in Asia at the time and flew back to ny for thanksgiving. He did really well on the flight, just ate and slept (in my arms the entire time though, would not go into the bassinet). This was before sleep training so his sleep was not good to begin with so we didn't really notice a difference regarding any time adjustment.

He was 5 months old on his first road trip to the beach (about 2.5 hours away). We stayed in my husband's co-worker's condo on the boardwalk, and it helped so much to be close to the beach. We were able to go out for an hour and walk back to the condo within minutes. Unfortnately his sleep schedule wasn't so great and changed permanetly when we came back home.

For us, the flight is not the problem. It's the jet lag that kills him, in both directions. It takes at least 4 days for him to get sorted.

We took our first plane trip when LO was 9 weeks old. It was only an hour and LO was fine.

At 5.5 months we did a big trip to the US for 3 weeks. I was a nervous wreck thinking about the 12 hour flight but LO was awesome - slept in the pull down bassinette for 9-10 hours both ways. Internal flights all went ok. I think LO actually adjusted better to jet lag than DH and I. The first night in the US we put LO in bed at the usual time and LO slept through to the morning. Phew!

First baby... 5 months from NYC to LA
Second baby... 5 weeks from NYC to Maui

Both did really well on their first flights. My first DD is almost 4 yo now and has been on more flights than I took as a kid/teen!

She's done lots and lots of car travel. Her first was at 3 weeks for my 30th birthday party. Our longest was a 8-9 hour car trip and she did pretty good. Only problem was she slept about 5-6 hours in the car so at 2 am she woke up thinking it was time to play.

We went camping in a cabin at three months. Then we went away for the weekend when she was 5 months, it was a long car ride and hotel. She was fine for both our trips. She sleeps great at night, probably because she's not the best napper.

We're probably taking the first flight when she's 11 months. My parents will be traveling with us for extra help.

I should say that since then, she has become a seasoned traveler. She's been to Hawaii, Seattle (multiple times), all over the Intermountain region, Virginia and probably some other states I can't remember. Soon she'll be traveling to Baltimore, Dallas and Kansas City on business with me :)

Lala's first flight was at 4 weeks of age. We took her to our new city to find our new home at that time... and actually, she helped us be the accepted bid on our current home. The homeowners were leaving while we were entering, and they fell in love with the little one :)

Charlie slept in a bunch of different hotels/sublets when we were getting our apartment treated for bed bugs (8 months) and then mold (13 months). He slept like a champ.

Then we took our first flight to la when he was 12 months. The flights weren't as bad as I expected, but his sleep was off before we even left for the trip due to a recent respiratory virus. His sleep was not great in LA because of the time change, and he started waking up in the middle of the night which he hadn't done since sleep training. it took awhile to get back on track once we got home because he got sick again.

How old was your LO when they first slept away from home or took a flight? How did they do?
