They really dont need to have them until the spaces between the back teeth close up. Some kids have their teeth very close together from the beginning but LO had gaps so we held off. So they do periodic X rays to check for infection, to check the roots for thinning, etc. They still expect her to lose them at some point, but she hasn't yet and it's been almost 1.5 years. They did front teeth since they were all in and did molars at 3 (they weren't fully in at 2.5). He did have an accident that ripped his lip open and caused his top teeth to bleed, so the x-ray looked at those teeth. But it sounded like they would have done x-rays no matter what. They have a machine where you have to stand still and he just couldn't do it! They got one side. He had been to the dentist several times already so I can't imagine doing them at the very first visit. They didn't bill insurance for the X-ray so he can try again in 6 months. But they were successful at her 3.5 year visit. ETA: They discovered she has an extra tooth up in her jaw between her two permanent front teeth (it's called a mesiodens). I think they were optional if kids couldn't sit still yet but it was covered so we did it. I have bad teeth in my family so I'm always worried about problems. I was a little surprised that would happen on his first appointment and at age 3. How old was your LO when he/she first had dental xrays. I am wondering if I should ask the dentist to delay xrays till he is 4.
