@grizz: I haven't slept rained yet, but we have a horrible sleeper.i. Stay at home, but if I was working we would have has to CIO by now. As it is, my babe has recently started refusing to sleep at night unless I'm in bed, meaning in get no break and never get to see my husband. It's not sustainable. My relationship, my health, and my sanity are all huge parts of me being a good, attentive mom.
When things have gotten bad in the past, we have picked an end date...like, if nothing has changed by x date, we have to try CIO. That encourages me to be more proactive about trying other methods. And usually, by the time the date rolls around, things have changed again.
I am always scared to try something new because I'm desperately clinging to the crappy sleep I get now and don't want to lose anymore. But things like pick up / put down seem to have really worked for people.
I really don't want t do CIO before a year (that's our end date for bed sharing), but I also don't want to be sick all the time, get anxious or depressed, gain a ton of weight, and fight with my husband....and all of those things will happen if I'm chronically fatigued or don't get a break ever. My needs are as important as her needs.
I'm obviously writing this for myself.... but I hope it helps you, too. Sometimes i feel held hostage by my own kid. I think it's okay to find ways to sometimes prioritize your needs.

@grizz: Make your DH be in charge of the monitor. My DH took it and kept it on his side of the bed. When she woke up, he would turn the volume off, and keep checking it to see if she was back asleep. Then turn it back on. It took 3 nights. I was still up but it helped me that he had the monitor so I couldn't just stare at it the whole time. Maybe it easier for me to deal with it.
Note, this was the 2nd sleep training we did. The first time she still woke up once to eat most nights, then it got earlier and earlier, teething came into play. And it just got awful again.
The 2nd time was harder for sure but I think she gets it more now. She is working on teeth #3, and seems in hurting from it but still STTN. She cried out in her sleep last night but then went right back to sleep each time.

6.5 months when we sleep trained, who knows how long it would have gone on otherwise! He hit another regression around 8 months but at least we had a month and a half of good sleep in there!

@Smurfette: @blackbird: I'm pretty sure that's our only option at this point! I'm sure I won't handle it well - I've resisted it because hearing him cry makes ME cry - but omg. He has to figure out how to sleep. Right now we're BOTH crying it out because im rocking him for hours and crying because im frustrated and exhausted.

Shit hit the fan at around 4, 4.5 months. At 5 months, we implemented the merlin sleep sack. It was hit and miss but still an improvement from 5 wake ups a night. Once a week, maybe, she'd STTN. Probably from being so damn exhausted the other nights she was up like a maniac. Then she rolled in it. So we went to a sleep sack and the sleep was awful. I got less than 5 hours of total sleep that night. So that's when I sleep trained. And she took to it really well and we've all been getting rest. I know you're anti-sleep training, but being exhausted 24/7 can change your tune, and THAT'S OK. Everyone needs sleep. Honestly, it was life changing for us and i hope it continues.

It started at 3 months for us, and went till 4 months. But we sleep trained, otherwise we probably would still be going through it. She was getting worse every night.

I know you are against CIO, so I hope you find something that works for y'all. It is so rough and trying to work on no sleep. Looking back no clue how I did it and even more kept us safe driving. I was so exhausted, I shouldn't have been driving.

@looch: Hahahahahaha!! I was going to say the same thing!

There are lucky ones that never experienced any regression and I personally know them. Then there are the people like me it comes back from time to time. So it does end, but it comes back. My friend has it worse.... her DD is 20 months and still wakes up at 4am asking for milk! She was the first one to have STTN (10-12 hours) back then.

@looch: I was going to say the same thing :(

We didn't have a 'classic' regression like what you are experiencing, but things definitely started to get just "worse" in general around 4.5 months. It's just been continually downhill since then. We did a consult too about something else, but she talked us through a bunch of 'interventions' for the regression when the time comes (it has). I'm planning to set up another one with her.

I don't know when it naturally would have ended since we got a sleep consult at 5.5 months. We had the same problem as you waking up so much, but I didn't have to go into work the next day since I SAH. Good luck, mama!

DS's bad sleep has only gotten worse. We've been up at the end of every sleep cycle the last several nights. It takes me an hour to get him down for 47 minutes on the dot. I fell asleep in a meeting testerday! Please tell me it ends soon! How long did the 4 month regression last for you?

Any tips, tricks, or life changing sleep gurus out there?
