@HabesBabe: He was still swaddled when we sleep trained initially. He is very soothed by his mobile, so he would cry a bit then stare at it to calm down. By the time we got to nap training, we switched him to the Merlin Suit for night and sleep sack for naps and I think it went faster because he had discovered his hands.

With C, at 11 1/2 months, and then again right before she turned 2. The first time around, we did extinction (with almost 2 hours of crying the first night!) and the 2nd time, we did checks. She stopped after the 3rd check both nights.

@Mrs. Polish: @HLK208: @loveisstrange: @cascademom: @edelweiss: @MamaChin: @Little Misters Mom: @blackbird: & other <6 months sleep training mamas... were your kids still swaddled? H is 5 months, and we will be STing at 6months, but homeboy LOVES his swaddle. I don't know how that would work, letting him cry and "self soothe" when his arms are strapped to his sides.

@catomd00: I absolutely agree with a lot of what you've said. :) We didn't sleep train our eldest. We co slept with him while he was young and would lay down with him to help him fall asleep and then sneak away and he would stay asleep but M refuses sleep at all unless we are right there the entire time. She is tired for the night at about 7:30 but wants us in there from that point forward. Once we do get in bed with her she will sleep all night with only 1-2 wake ups for nursing which I'm totally fine with.

@coopsmama: I would have guessed older given the whole sneak out and wake up thing!

Have you tried leaving a t-shirt with your scent on it nearby? You could tuck one into the corner of her crib...

Everyone has their own opinion, but at 3 months I don't think there's anything wrong with rocking baby to sleep. At that age, we would try to teach her to fall asleep on her own by putting her down drowsy (with white noise - have you tried that?) and letting her attempt to fall asleep on her own. If she started crying I would immediately pick her up and rock her to sleep. Sometime's she would fall asleep on her own, other times she wouldn't. We did this every night and as time wore on she got better and better with it. I think 3 months is much too young personally to expect them to put themselves to sleep every single night or for some babies at all (but take my opinion with a grain of salt because I don't believe in sleep training). They're just waking up out of the 4th trimester and learning it's a big world out there that they're just a small part of. They need mom to make them feel secure!

Okay! Thanks for the insight. I'm not looking to night-wean but we need to help this girl learn to fall asleep on her own.

She's only 3 months and a week though so it looks like we have some time to wait.

16 months. He first started STTN around 4.5 months, but if he did wake randomly, I'd nurse him. He would wake in the middle of the night a couple times per month, then go back to STTN. Then, when I weaned at around 14 months, we rocked him to sleep. Then, he started waking up as soon as we put him down, so we realized that we needed to teach him to fall asleep on his own at around 16 months.

We were in the exact same place as you are now with spending hours bouncing him down, gingerly placing him in the crib, only to have him wake up. Now he goes to bed at 6 pm without a fuss, and I can enjoy his awake time without quietly dreading the next nap.
