We moved our first out of his infant seat around 5 months. He was no longer comfortable due to his reflux. He is still RFing at over 2 years old and will be for another 3 years (or until he reaches the limits on his Radian).

We moved our second out of his when he was around 6 months because he, too, was no longer comfortable. He screamed wherever we went. He's still RFing and will be for many years more.

We bought a "big girl" carseat for DD a few weeks ago, but we've been too lazy to replace her infant seat. At almost 10 months, she still fits in it, but a little more leg room would be nice.

The new seat we bought fits all the way up to 55 lbs, backwards facing.

We just did last week at 9.5 months. More that the bucket seat/baby combo was getting way too heavy to transfer from car to car than that he truly outgrew it.

LO is 2.5 months and already too heavy for me to carry him in his infant seat. We got a Maxi Cosi Mico (22 lbs) and he weighs about 15 lbs. I kind of regret getting that infant seat! Should've just gone with the convertible from the start.

We never used an infant seat, just a convertible car seat- I don't know any one that used an infant seat. By guidelines they can be turned around to front facing at 8kgs (I think that's about 17.5lbs) as that is usually around 6 months or so. DD is 7 months and not yet 8kgs so is still rear facing. We faced DS forward at 8 kgs.

I am in Australia, so the laws are a lot different. By the guidelines on my car seat it can be rear faced until 12 kgs (26.5lbs or so) and then must be forward facing. DS is 13.5kg at 2 years 7 months and I can't imagine him being rear facing when he was 12kg!

@LazyLightning: I was actually able to move my front seat further back with the convertible seat rear facing than where it was positioned with the infant seat and I drive a Mazda 3, so a tiny car. There are lots of seats out there that are designed to fit into smaller vehicles.

We moved E at 9 months in my car and 10 months in DH's car. He was getting pretty near the height limit of our snugride 30 and he was too heavy for me to carry in the seat. I want to keep him rear facing until he reaches the limits of our seat, so 40lbs.

It's important to look at the height and weight requirements on the seats, and use those as a determination of whether your kid should be rear facing or not.

In Sweden, where they have some of the longest rear facing periods in the world, the seats are designed in a way that allow the hips and legs to not be scrunched up.

@highwire: Ok so... I knew the guideline was 2 years... but isn't the law still 1 year?

Honestly I'm waiting for the studies to come out in a few years citing hip and knee problems in toddlers related to being crammed in a backwards car seat when they're much too tall for it. But isn't that everything these days? It's 'safer' until it's not.

(I'm not denying it isn't safer in a crash. I just know I wouldn't want to ride like that, knees to chin. Nor is it safe for mom to be jammed up against the steering wheel like a sardine I suppose.)

We switched him to a convertible seat at 5.5 months because we gave our infant seat to my nephew. My LO could still fit in an infant seat now (according to the guidelines). He is 13 months and we plan to keep him rear-facing until at least 2.

@bpcmarj: Yeah I really doubt we'll make it a year in the infant seat. I haven't had her yet but she's already measuring 'large' and we got a small infant seat too (snugride22). So, whatever we need to do to keep her safe of course... if the convertible seat has to rear face, we'll make it work. I have trouble seeing how we could put it in the middle of either of our cars though - seems like it'd still interfere with the seatbacks. We'll see though, maybe there is more room back there than I think. We both drive small SUVs.

@LazyLightning: my super tall baby was out of hers at her 9 month appointment because she was 30 inches (height limit in snugride30). Thankfully we have a big sedan and with her in the middle we can all fit comfortably in the front seat. So we'll try to stay rear facing as long as possible.
