I think that is a good rule of thumb. Here in Mexico most baby girls have their ears pierced at birth but I don't think I can get onboard with that (if we have a girl). I remember when my mom took me and I cried a lot. I stopped wearing earrings a few years later and the holes closed. I got the repierced in high school and then got a second and third hole, two in my cartledge, and one in my rook. I still wear my first and second hole and the rook. It was awful...they pierced crooked, AND kept getting infected. We had to end up letting them close on their own and re-pierce them later. My ears never got infected and never closed up. In high school I had my tragus pierced (the little nub of your ear) but took it out after a year or so when it got infected.
