I got it because I had started driving and my parents thought I should be able to call them if I got into trouble. They make very simplified cell phones for kids - Firefly, Kajeet, etc. - that I will probably allow our kids to have until they are in high school. Our niece got an iPhone when she was 8! No need for a smart phone or even a camera phone until they are much older, but I understand the desire to want to be able to get in touch with them. Pay phones don't exist anymore! I remember getting in trouble for using it to call my friends on it. I think a 10 minute call cost somewhere around $8. I got my own in '99 (so I was 20/21) but only because I was going to do an internship in FL and the long distance or calling cards costs would have been ridiculous- getting a cell was the practical thing to do. I was one of the few of my friends that had one, but we lived so far away from everything it made sense. I could only use it to call my parents or memaw to pick me up from practice after school. The battery lasted for a week b/c it was never used!!! I worked with a girl who's boyfriend got a bunch of deals at Cellular One. It's the only reason I got one. That and so my boyfriend and I could call each other for free while we were apart at college. I paid for it myself. For a while, my parents didn't even know I had it. I was 16, in high school, and able to drive legally by myself. My sister had been harassing my parents for awhile about getting one and my mom finally gave in with the condition that she had to pay for it herself. She also agreed to let me get one if I paid for it and my dad was M.A.D!! He didn't see the point in me having one. Naturally he was (and still is!) the person who calls me the most. He calls me every morning on my drive to work and every night when I'm sitting at home just to check in.
