I don't know if I learned early or just advanced quickly. I remember being pissed off at Montessori when a teacher who didn't know me wouldn't let me read particular books because she thought they were "too hard" for me. And in first grade I was reading my third grade reading partners' books too easily so they pulled out a dictionary. There was only one word that I remember stumping me (Nebuchadnezzar) but they had to go ask the teacher what it was too so I felt better. So funny what things you remember! I wrote my first "book" at three which my mom still has- "The Tale of the Poisonous Cat!" The plot didn't make much sense (for some reason everyone was falling into a hole- there were no actual cats...I was a weird kid) but my mom loves to pull it out and show it to people even now. I was 5 when I learned and as much as I'd love LO to learn around that age, I also know that each kids learns at their own pace. My mom homeschooled all six kids and we all learned at different times. My brother was nine when he learned, my sister is 7.5 and she doesn't know yet either. I don't think it's a reflection on my mom at all; my sister, other brother and I all learned around 5ish. Each kid is soooo different! I had trouble, though. My oldest memory is of crying over Hooked On Phonics. From everything I've heard, kindergarten is the new 1st grade, so I definitely plan on giving my kids as much of a head start as possible! I knew a little bit before kindergarten. Being a pre-k teacher, I definitely plan on teaching my children to read simple words before they start kindergarten. Some kids come in my class at 4 knowing all their letters and some definitely don't- there's a huge range. I'd love to teach my children to read before they go to school too. How old were you when you learned how to read and do you plan on teaching your children how to read before they go to school?
