Redshirting has becoming increasingly common these days, so that could be why some kids are 6 years old when they begin Kindergarten. Any child going to kindergarten will have to turn 5 before Oct 1 for the school year. Next year, the child will have to turn 5 by Sept 1 in order to attend kindergarten and the date will be permanent. If the child's bday falls after the cut of date, then s/he will attend transitional-kindergarten. Schools are mandated to have this program available to accommodate those students. This law came about because many educators feel that very young students (between 3 and early 5 yrs old) were not developmentally prepared for kindergarten. Also, if you don't know, kindergarten in California is not mandatory so you can have your child skip kindergarten and go to first grade base on age. In NC, you had to be 5 before October 15, but now it's August 31. My SIL is a kindergarten teacher and some of her kids are just 3 in September (you just need to be turning 4 before December 31 to start in September). On Facebook people are saying they started as late as 6!! I thought 4 was the normal age to start school. When did you go to Kindergarten?
