We are now almost 32 with 2 kids and we rent a 3 bed 2.5 bath townhouse in the suburbs for less than what we paid in mortgage and condo fee for our city condo. We rent out our condo. We're planning to buy a house in the next 5 years or so. </p> <p>So we did it backward (buy an apartment, rent a "home") and it's been fine! I'd actually really prefer to get the condo sold and off our hands so we don't have to be landlords and just be renters. So many benefits (no landscaping or snowplowing, our landlord maintains everything in the home so no fixing or replacing of appliances, etc). He wants to go back to school for something science-related and is working with a career counselor at the moment to figure out exactly what he wants to go into, so we've decided to just rent for a few years in case we relocate after he's finished with school.</p> <p>It's kind of a bummer (original plan was house ASAP, then either TTC or start the adoption process before I'm 30), but it's also a weight off our shoulders for now. I mean, there's no sense in buying a house if we might move out of state in a few years, right? And we can still do the having-kids thing on our original timeline even if we don't own a home, I suppose; plenty of people have children in apartments and are just fine. Anyway, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it! No need to rush. :)</p> <p>Anyway, how old were you when you bought your first home? </p>
