I don't pay too much attention to best by or use by dates. I develop them at work and a lot of times best by date selection comes down to a business need. For meat, dairy & produce so much depends on your refrigerator temperature. I tend to use the sniff test more than anything. Pantry items are typically good as long as you think they taste OK.

Very picky. But with milk I do the sniff test.

This is super timely. I am organizing our pantry. Lots of things are "best before..." What is the rule with food in the pantry?

I'm not suuuuper picky. Meat I definitely wouldn't eat after the expiration date. Milk gets the sniff test. Eggs get the water test. I kind of figure expiration dates are extremely cautious because stores and sellers don't want liability if something happens.

Meat and dairy I won't eat if it's expired/close to expired.
Canned goods and condiments: I'll still eat if it looks and smells ok. I'm fine with bread until it's moldy or stale.

Some things. Milk and prepacked salad, no because I find they just doesn't last. Sour cream and yogurt is still good. Canned stuff, salad dressings and anything else with tons of preservatives I will use a long time. @Meowkers: just an FYI, the best before date on food doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, just not as good as it could be. Medication, on the other hand, doesn't work as well (or at all depending on how long it's been) past it's date.

I'm not that picky. I go by smell/looks of it rather than the date.

The one thing that I will routinely eat after its expiration date is yogurt. Some post-dates canned foods are also safe, apparently.

For most things yes. I won't eat it past the expiration if it's meat or dairy or condiments. If it's bread I'll eat it as long as there's no sign of mold. And I definitely still use meds that are past the expiration date.

I'm very picky. If something is even a day or two before an expiration date I get iffy about it. I will sometimes still eat/drink it, but I would rather not.

Are you picky about eating foods close to expiration? Will you eat foods beyond the expiration date?
