Same as @charm54. The hospital wouldn't admit me until they were at least 5min apart. I finally got them to take me in after I'd been having them constantly (but anywhere from 5-15min apart!) for 3 days. They examined me and i was already at 4cm... So even if your contractions aren't consistently spaced, they may be helping you progress!

@Mrs. Lion: Last time my contractions started around 9 am and it took until 11 pm for them to get to 5 minutes apart, though they were still manageable. We went to the hospital and they sent me home with an Ambien (ugh.) We came back at 6 am the next morning when THOSE contractions were 5 minutes apart - they were difficult to talk/breathe/whatever through. Totally different.

Mine were regular almost from the start. I had a few very painful ones that were about an hour apart before things really kicked off. But then they settled in to a pattern of 8-10 min apart, then 6-7, then 5, then anywhere between 2 and 4 min apart. At that point we went to the hospital.

Mine were very irregular and spread out in early early labor. I finally was consistent at 5 minutes apart after at least 5 or so hours at home, and went to hospital shortly thereafter.

I'd dilated quite a bit, but I still stalled out at the hospital and labored there for another 6 or so hours before I could push.

Mine were never regular. They came every 8-14 minutes early on though. I went to the hospital because I needed to know where I was in labor, I had no idea I was halfway there when they checked me.

Mine were never regular, they'd be anywhere from 3-4 minutes apart to almost 10 the night before I gave birth. It kept me very confused. They did get more and more intense, so we went to the hospital in the morning and were admitted. Maybe call your doctor again and see what they think?

Similar to @Charm54: they weren't that regular- they would get close then slow down. This went on for about twelve hours, getting more intense but it took a long time for them to get genuinely painful. At one point I had hit the 5-1-1 point but they were only slightly worse than the worst period cramps I've ever had, so after talking to the midwife I still stayed home a few more hours. They got intense after that, but yeah it was a long time.

I got to the hospital 20 hours after I first started having contractions, was 4 cm, had C not even 4 hours later.

I didn't have early Labor with O, they immediately were 1 min long and 1 min apart. With C, it was just constant crampy feeling til we got to the hospital, and then they were maybe 5 min apart - 10 min apart? Totally irregular.

Mine were never regular. They came every 7 to 20 minutes for 12 hours but were always over a minute long. By the time i went to the hospital i was 6 cm dilated. Then they still werent regular and pretty much stopped so i had to get pitocin. 3 hours later she was born.

Mine were never regular in frequency or duration.y water semi-broke (high leak) at 1 am and contractions started shortly thereafter. 9 am I was 4cm and only had a few contractions between then and 11:30 when I got the epi. Baby arrived at 530 pm.

Mine were wierd...they would get super close together for a while and then space out.....then get close together again. The strangest part was they never ever got regular....even when I was 8-9cm dilated they were anywhere from 1-7 mins apart. They definitely increased in intensity though !

I have been having pre-term contractions for about 7 weeks now, and now that I am full term I am only supposed to go to the hospital if my contractions fit the 5-1-1 rule. I have been having 1-3 minute contractions since about 12pm today (so for about 8 hours) and they have ranged between 3 and 10 minutes apart (mostly around 7-8 minutes apart). If they are "real" contractions, should they be settling into an every 5 minute pattern? Or is there a range? My doctor also told me to be on the lookout for them to be more intense, which they definitely are, but I don't know if I would put them in the category of "painful" yet....just very uncomfortable.

So, I guess my question is, when you were in early labor, how regular were the spacings between contractions?
