Update for anyone who finds this with a similar question:

We watched Moana this afternoon. Overall, I think my girls had a little bit of a hard time really following the story line - it's a bit more complex than Frozen, IMO. They were 100% fine with the lava monster scenes, but didn't like some of the more perilous shipwreck parts, and my nearly-5-year old hid behind the sofa while the sparkly crab was singing. Not sure why he was scary - it was kind of like the Ursula scene in TLM, I guess!

Anyway, they're finishing the movie, but I think we'll just stick to watching the video for the theme song for now. I'm glad we didn't buy it! Thanks to all who offered their feedback!

my 4 year old was pretty scared during Moana. part of it was she was worried about how dark/loud the cinema was, and the other part was the realm of monsters/lava monster (I think she got rather emotional about the story line too).

she did love the movie though, and wants to read the book often as well as role play. she refuses to watch it again though :/

@Mrs. Sunshine: funny you should mention Bolt - I was thinking of getting it for DD1 b/c she loves dogs, but was reminded although it ends happily, there's a lot of stress along the way!

@PinkElephant: it's definitely not a huge part of the movie, and there is some comic relief afterwards, but I know some kids are really sensitive to that kind of imagery. It is kind of surprising how many Disney movies are missing one or both parent when you stop and think about it!!

My son is OBSESSED with Maui. He has the fish hook, tattoos, and pjs featuring Maui. He has pretended to be Maui almost daily since we first saw it in November!

Thanks, all! It sounds like I just need to plan to watch it with them (which I would have done, anyway) so I can provide explanations/skip through scenes as needed.

@bookwormmama: I'll watch out for the nightmare part - what's with dead/disappearing parents in Disney movies?!?! :) The part in Frozen where Elsa & Anna's parents die in a shipwreck pretty much goes over my kids' heads though - DD1, who is nearly 5, FINALLY asked a bit more about it recently when watching for the billionth time. I also actually wondered if Maui himself might be a little scary, but I showed him to DD2 today in one of the music video clips, and she was fine with him .

@PinkElephant: I wouldn't say it's scarier in monster-terms, but there are quite a few tense, scary moments (My son was jumping up and down, shaking his hands in nervousness, basically acting like me when I watch a tense scene ever since I was a kid.) but my 2 yr old was totally unfazed.

I would say it's scarier than Frozen. The snow monster is in such a small part of the movie, but there are a lot more potentially scare parts in Moana. My son (almost 3) loved it and did not get scared. I have a hard time judging scare factor because my son doesn't get scared in movies. We saw it twice in the theaters and have watched it 3 times since Tuesday. We love it, but it's definitely older/more mature than Frozen.

The lava monster parts are kinda scary, but I also think the realm of monsters scene could be scary too. There's a lot of weird monsters and the color scheme is very psychedelic which could make it seem scarier. Moana also has a nightmare that her island/parents disappear. Also, Maui is a jerk to Moana for the first half or so of the movie. It's pretty lighthearted IMO, but if your kids don't like mean characters they might not like him or a lot of the scenes he is in.

My kid doesn't usually scare easily, but she left the theater during Moana. My MIL was the one who had taken her, so I don't know how nervous vs scared she was, but DD reported it being "really scary" and hadn't even made it to the lava monster I don't think. She's 4.

We saw it in the theater with my nieces, and a 2.5, 3.5, and 7 yo all loved it and weren't scared! Lo1 was the youngest and I think knowing her big cousins were there made there be some peer pressure to enjoy it/not get restless or scared.

My kids are younger and are obsessed with it. It's probably my two year olds favorite movie.

The lava Monster is scary but the last scene with her is beautiful and redeems the other scarier bits.

It's in 3 scenes. I think you could skip the first two easily but might miss part of the story skipping the third. Your LOs probably won't mind but you might want to go back and watch it yourself later. Here's a picture:

We saw Moana twice in the theater. E, who is three, really likes the movie, but told me in the second viewing that she was scared of the lava monster. I told her she could hide her eyes during that part (couldn't skip forward since we were in a theater ;)), and she was fine with that. I personally find when they go into the underworld to be creepier (glowing eyes/teeth) but none of the kids seemed to be phased.

Just want to say, I love Moana :)

I do think the lava monster is sorta freaky, but I don't know if I'd say it's scarier than Frozen. I feel like there are more intense scenes in Moana? My LO is 3.5 and doesn't really get scared during movies...she's been fine with both Frozen and Moana.

Maybe b/c the snow monster doesn't really talk/have a role other than to be nasty, they don't feel duped by thinking it's nice, then having it act mean?

My thirteen year old niece is coming to visit my little girls, and I thought that one afternoon we might have a girlie movie night (popcorn, pedicures, etc.) and watch Moana, which the (girls almost 3 & 5) haven't seen yet, because they're loving dancing to the soundtrack at ballet class. However, my niece said she thought it might be too scary. I'm taking it with a grain of salt, because she is a sensitive girl and also claims she was traumatized by Finding Nemo, Wall-E, and a few other Disney titles :) :)

So, in comparison to Frozen (which my girls have seen a million times and are generally ok with) and Finding Dory (which they've seen once, and said was a little mean/scary)...how scary is Moana? I'm looking at Common Sense Media to get an idea of what exactly is scary... but generally feel like that site is a little conservative for our family.

Thanks!!!
