Sal Army has several drop off stations near our house. I do a cleaning, packup my car, drop off bags and get a receipt :)

I give them to my sister in law to pick through and then she either donates the rest or tries to sell stuff on ebay. If she actually sells stuff, she gives me half. I'm more than happy with this since she gets use out of my clothes and then she does all of the work of selling anything.

We give away anything that is still in nice condition, and don't take a tax write-off. Recently, we've been giving our stuff directly to families we know who are in need, so that wouldn't be eligible anyhow.

We donate everything. The Purple Heart in our area does monthly pickups, so we just gather our stuff up for the pickup date and put it on our front porch. We don't typically even bother with the tax write off. Occasionally, if I know it's something we need at the hospital, I'll bring it to work and donate it to our social work closet for homeless patients.

If I have nice clothes that I love but just don't wear (usually that only happens if they don't fit), I'll give them to someone that I know. I like them to have a good home and I usually know someone that would love to have them. I've given my SIL a ton of clothes.

If nobody wants the stuff, I either save it for a garage sale or donate.

ALSO!! You should check in your city to see if there are women's charities who help either connect low-income women with job interview clothes or low income teens with formal wear for HS dances. in chicago, there's a great nonprofit called Bottomless Closet where your clothes go directly to those sorts of clients. very cool.

I would do eBay for any pricey designer items. I had a lot of expensive barely-worn designer shoes that I sold on eBay. I went up a half-size, so they didn't fit. I wanted to at least get some $$ for new designer shoes.

I'm definitely one who donates... much easier and makes me feel good to know someone who needs them will use them, or the charity can sell them for cash toward their mission...

I would do consignment but like pp said you have nicer stuff so if you get more through a tax write off do it :)

I've done eBay for my more $$ items but 100+ pieces of clothing would be crazy

I usually give the nicer stuff to my little sister who is close to my size, young and just starting out with a more professional career. Then I do have a few things that I feel like I should do consignment, but never enough for me to actually do it. I generally just drop them all in the donation bin and don't even get a tax write off. But, for every one nice thing, there are 5 Gap level things and 15 Target/Old Navy type things, so it would be different if I had nicer stuff.
My grandmother works in a consignment store where the benefits go to a local charity, so sometimes we give her the decent stuff (Banana Republic quality or better, which isn't much for me).

I sold all of my nice stuff on ebay before I got married.
When I purge, I just donate to salvation army or Goodwill now.
If you have the time, I'd totally sell to a thrift store or consignment store for extra money!

I donate all my clothes to Goodwill. They are usually a low-label brand (Gap, Old Navy, Target) or already thrifted/bought at a consignment store, so it's not worth my trouble to attempt to sell them because most places wouldn't buy them. We don't donate enough to get a tax writeoff, either. But if you have nice label stuff, I'd go the consignment route!

@Mrs. Bee: ooh there are services that will eBay your stuff for you. They take a percentage of whatever they can sell just like consigning. You might be able to recoup more cash that way if your items are name brand and pricey?

I usually go to Plato's Closet with clothes I want to get rid of because they buy them on the spot--you don't have to wait for money like at a consignment store. Don't know if you have one near you or not! (or maybe a Buffalo Exchange?) Otherwise I would probably consign them and then donate what I couldn't get money for.

Is there any brand name stuff? You could try Ebay? I sold a few things that I had found in my closet that way.

It's a lot more work than your 3 options however. Not sure if you have time for that between all of your current responsibilities!

I did a closet purge yesterday since my pre-kids wardrobe (lots of events that required dressier clothes) doesn't match my current lifestyle. I purged 2 huge garbage bags full of clothes, mostly dresses that I've worn once or not at all.

I could donate them to a local charity and get a tax write-off, I could sell them to a local thrift store, or I could sell them to a local consignment store where I could get cash, or 50% more value if I get store credit.

I'd get a fraction of a fraction of what I paid for if I sold them, but it would be cash! The local consignment store where I could get store credit does have cute things so I could replenish my wardrobe a little bit. If I donate them, I could write off their depreciated value which would be much higher than what a thrift store would pay.

What do you do with your old clothes? If they were just regular clothes I'd donate them, but they're mostly new, nice, pricey, dressy clothes.
