(My mom died a few years ago, and this is the first grandbaby, so I also wanted to make it special for him.) My dad's a coffee drinker, so I bought a nice mug at Target and used Sharpie paint pens to write "Pappap Joe est. 2016" on it. It took him a minute to figure out, but then he started crying! Maybe you could tell your mom you put together a photo book of really great family photos and look at it together.
