@Mrs. Sketchbook: since our playroom is on the lower level, we dont really clean up every night. I realized he plays better when the toys are mixed up like he wants them, so I bought a bunch of fabric bins and he puts his blocks, cars, train pieces, etc away all jumbled up. I have a large bin for duplos and a train table, which functions as a parking lot.

Maybe a solution is to swap out your coffee table or a train table with drawers or a kids table with storage.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: We recently started doing a rotation. Our first stretch has been a couple months though (since I changed the toys out) because we were having our basement remodeled and I couldn't get to the toys. Oops. But when I brought out a few of his things that he hadn't seen for a few weeks, he got SO excited and has played with them all every day this week.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: The rotation works really well for us. I just scooped up half of the toys from each space that has toys (his room has a few, our living room, then our playroom) and put them in a bin. Every Sunday, I switch the bins out. He always immediately notices on Monday and is markedly more interested at the beginning of the week. Then, like I said, if I noticed something hasn't been played with in a few weeks, it's donated, sold, or stored.

@scg00387: I think that is it for sure. I keep on deleting, but every time I delete, I think of more to delete! Maybe the best thing would be to say, ok, what do I want to keep out vs. what do I want to delete?

I haven't done a rotation I just split them between our living room and his room, and switch them every so often.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: yeah, that makes sense. Maybe you just have too many toys out at once? I have a toy rotation and try to limit what we have out at one time. But otherwise I guess I don't necessarily care if he pays any attention to his toys or not. Most often, he likes playing with the kitchen tools and looking out the window!

@looch: a playroom would help! We only have our living room and since LO is still young I feel like I have to keep my eyes on him, or at least be able to hear him. But in six months or so, it would be so useful!

Did you put up the infant toys like rattles, etc? I had to put those up, it was just getting to be too much to deal with. They multiply like rabbits! He does like to sneak into his closet and play with them though!

Do you have to organize the toys in the playroom every night? I feel like my son's attention is so scattered that I have to organize and put together the toys, otherwise he really pays them zero attention. But that is probably just because he is still young.

I don't see any reason to pack up or rotate his toys, we have a playroom and it stays down there. Plus, I enjoy seeing the creative ways he uses his stuff.

@scg00387: Mine tends to strew everything out in the floor but then none of it really seems different from anything else, if that makes sense? Like all the play food, plus all the blocks, all the puzzle pieces, and all the stacker pieces into a huge jumble. Then he ignores it all! I figure as long as he is going to do that, I might as well get rid of anything that he has mastered, since at that point he really isn't playing with one item differently from any other item, if that makes sense! I guess I mean, he can have a play apple or a piece of a baby stacker and is liable to drop either on the other side of the baby gate (his new favorite game), so why keep the baby stacker out when he really isn't playing it like a stacker and can easily just drop other age appropriate items, lol!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I put toys away when I realize he hasn't touched in in a few weeks. I don't really care if he is playing with it in a different manner- I don't see it as an issue I guess! P

I am going to be more mindful about putting toys up after LO masters them. Obviously not lovies or push toys, but like his basic stacker, soft blocks, and shape sorter, etc., all that stuff needs to be gone! He doesn't ever play with them anymore, so why do I still have them out? We have a more complex train stacker, some smaller blocks, and a few basic puzzles so really, there is no point.

I should add my son at 18 months very seldom sits down and just plays with a toy. He mostly bounces off the walls with various pieces of toy in his hands! He'll do the toy if I set it up and he's in the right mood, but if he is choosing to play with the toy, he rarely plays with them in the "right" way, even if he has the ability to play it correctly. So a lot of these toys go unnoticed.

I think soon we'll hit a plateau where he isn't moving past toys so quickly, and then this won't be an issue.
