I just was in for my annual and told her we were probably going to start TTC in about 6 months (so before my next annual) and asked what I should do - she just said start taking a multivitamin with at least 400mg of folic acid and that is enough until I actually get pregnant. Then 3 months before, I switched to a pre-natal vitamin. I switched over to a prenatal from a regular multivitamin (under the care of my OB) and just kept taking it, even when I was still on the pill.
