I started at 4 weeks. In the beginning, I would pump just in the morning after Xander's first feed, but I eventually started pumping after every feed (during the day - he clusterfeed in the evening, so I didn't pump then). That gave me 8 weeks to build up a 70+ oz stash before I returned to work.

During the first week! I had an oversupply and DD would only eat from 1 side. My LC wanted me to have both sides either nursed or pumped for 10 minutes every 3 hours so she would eat on one side and I would pump the other.

I pumped for the first time in the hospital. LO was verrrrry sleepy, so they wanted to make sure my milk would come in. I started pumping to actually store up milk around 5.5 weeks. I'm on maternity leave for a year though, so I don't do it consistently.

@bisous: I was scared too at first! I used a hand pump the first few times cause the electric terrified me!

I started at 4 weeks so we could try bottles which were a big fail. I built a nice stash though for when I go back to work!

At about two weeks pp. my midwife advised me to start her on one bottle a day to prep for going back to work. Plus I was able to build up a stash and donate some BM to other mamas with supply issues. Will do the same for future LOs.

At around three weeks. I would have started sooner, but I was scared. :silly: Hahaha...not sure why. At this point I have put in 100+ hours pumping so it seems ridiculous that I was scared in retrospect!

Day one. I had issues with my inverted nipple so the LC had me pumping 15 min after every feeding and feed it back to LO through SNS. It seemed reasonable at first. Then my milk came in. Holy engorgement. I built up a 100oz supply. Then I wasted it trying to get LO to take a bottle before I went back to work.

M was born 4 weeks early and was very sleepy so they had me start pumping the day after she was born to supplement with. Once I got home the LC had me pumping after every feed for a while. It was so much work! I'm sure it helped me establish a great supply though.

They had be start pumping in the hospital to help draw out my flat nipples. So I just stuck with it. Of course whe LO was around 7 weeks she was diagnosed with MSPI and other intolerances and I had to throw out my whole stash and couldn't add anything to it until we identify all the foods she was intolerant to and eliminated them.
