I can't recite the policy, but kids have to be symptom free for 24 hours if they were sent home. If you are called to pick up your child you must do so within the hour. Last week we were all notified a stomach bug is going around.

I think ours is pretty standard. Fever over 100.4, vomiting or diarrhea and we get a phone call to pick up. I've gotten phone calls when he had a fever of 99, but didn't have to pick him up. They just wanted to give me a heads up in case it went any higher (he also had a runny nose at that point otherwise I don't think they would have bothered to call).

Ours is pretty much the same as @avivoca:. I appreciate it, but not sure how much good it really does since so many illnesses are contagious before the high fever hits.

Strict apparently. We just started and we've been sent home with "diarrhea" that never materialized and "hand foot and mouth" that also never materialized. Frustrating to say the least.

Practical/balanced. They call for a true clinical fever (100.4+), vomiting, diarrhea (3 or more really loose stools). The written policy is home for additional 24 hrs after symptom free, but they let us be very magical in counting hours so long as LO is clearly well again when he goes back.

Strict! Our daycare is nestled within a special needs school, so there is an on-site nurse and all. Although the rules are not in our favor when my kid is sick, I certainly appreciate it.

Not very! I've never been called to pick her up, even though there are days when I'll arrive after work and think "wow, my kid is totally sick!". I think it's hard to keep track/take temperatures when there are so many of them, so unless a kid is miserable or throwing up I don't think they call.

The fever cut-off is 100.5, and they add a degree to all underarm temps. She also can't come back until she's been fever-free for 24 hours. It's only annoying when she is feverish because she is teething. There are some that are more strict that I looked at where your kid cannot come if they are excessively snotty. That seems a bit ridiculous because H has a runny nose most of the winter, so she would be out a lot.

Ours (center) is pretty strict! They call us to come get her if she has a fever above like 99, and she has to stay home for 24 hrs after a fever or vomiting. On the plus side though, she's rarely been sick (beyond minor colds) in the 2 years she's been in day care. I know other kids in her class have had hfm or other more serious bugs but she rarely catches any of it (except sniffles of course)

@mrbee: We use an in home daycare and they are fairly lax. I notice all the fever calls come in around 4pm which could be due to wake ups from naps or nice because I get off work at 4:30. This week after LO's 2nd absence for illness they offered to watch him in a separate room since they knew it was a hard week for us (I started a new job). It is very nice when you have the sick kid but I do wonder if they would get sick less often if they were more strict. Honestly, I doubt it.

We used a small in-home daycare for our kids, and they were pretty relaxed about mild sickness! It was great when our own kids were a little under the weather... but of course when the shoe is on the other foot, not so great. One time a kid got really sick and the teachers called the parents, who refused to come until their son started bleeding out of his nose. It looked like an Ebola situation and I remember thinking then that maybe a relaxed approach towards sickness isn't always a good thing!
