Love @daniellemybelle's suggestion. I might also add something about leading by example.

@daniellemybelle: That's great!
I'd focus on the fact that you plan to use positive reinforcement, redirection, etc (and that you both agree!)

If it were me I'd say something like: "We were both fortunate to have loving parents who meant well. We will instill our family values in our child by different methods than our parents chose, focusing on positive reinforcement, open communication & fostering mutual respect."

I'd say the spanking party is crucial, and probably what they're really getting at. I know that if I were placing a child for adoption, finding parents who wouldn't spank would be high on my list. It's probably something that birth mothers are usually interested in, whatever their beliefs are on the matter.

I feel the same way. The terms I am most familiar with are "gentle discipline" and "positive parenting". Simply saying you both agree against spanking and hitting is important too. After all, you won't know what works until you are there.

We're filling out our adoption application (yay!) but I am totally stumped on one question -- how do you plan to discipline your child? How is it the same or different from your parents? Both my husband and I were spanked/hit by our parents and we do not plan on doing the same. But how to sum up our plan for discipline concisely? There's like 5 lines for the answer so it's not like they want a power point presentation.
