In case anyone was wondering, the CPST decided to put all three seats in the middle row. So, it works! It feels kinda sad wasting the third row, but I’m so glad they fit and I don’t have to return the car!

Thank you all for your help.

My oldest was five when she got moved to the third row (bc of third baby). What helped was I got one of those things you hang on the back of the seats in front of her and filled it with books, drawing utensils, etc and she was content

Update: I installed the seats tonight and the only way it worked was to have my 5 year old in the 3rd row with the infant seat and RF convertible in the 2nd row for my 2 year old. I have an appointment with a tech on Monday to make sure they’re installed correctly. I’m just glad they fit.

Why not do your 5 year old in the middle position in the third row and the two little ones in the second row? Once the 5 year old switches to a belted booster, she could move to a side position in the third row if you’re worried about that.

@CatchAFallingStar: no, I haven’t. I’m a former CPST and I try to stay up to date on car seats and vehicles. You might be able to do three across the middle row, but it would be very hard due to the small middle seat. The traverse is, unfortunately, not a super car seat friendly vehicle.

For what it’s worth when we moved our 4 year old to the third row I was worried about not being able to hand him stuff but he loves it and understands that he’s too far away to ask for things. I’ll hand him his water and a snack before we start driving if it’s a longer trip. He has his own stash of toys back there and it’s not been a problem at all.

@CatchAFallingStar: can you find a cpst in your area? Many fire stations have at least a tech or 2. I would call and see if you can make an appointment. They will go over all seats and help you install them as well as teach you how
I would think having someone in person would get you figured out more quickly 🙂

@CatchAFallingStar: the third row in the traverse is very tight. There are only a few rear facing seats that would fit back there, and they would have to be as upright as allowed. The angle required to fit would likely not be safe for a newborn. So your newborn will have to be in the second row. If you have a bench in the second row you might be able to accomplish three across but it would be tight and your middle LO would possible need a new seat. If you have captains chairs, you would likely need to do newborn in one, one girl in the other, and the last in the third row middle

When your oldest switches to booster mode the tether is not an issue and she could be on an outboard seat in the third row.

@catgirl: ugh. I’m getting really worried that this might not work. I have the Graco Transitions. I don’t think it would work to have a front facing in the middle seat because she’d be too close to her sister. What website are you referring to to check on tether information?

@CatchAFallingStar: all forward facing harness seats (so a convertible used forward facing or a combination seat used in harness mode) should use the tether anchor for safety. The main installation method, lower anchors or seatbelt, will depend on seating position and child weight but the tether anchor should always be used forward facing. It looks like there is one tether anchor in your third row - it’s for the middle seat. So if you want a forward facing child in the third row, they would need to be there.

Is your middle row a bench or captains chairs? Which graco do you have? Some are much wider than others.

sounds like you may have ruled this out, but we bought a three row and then decided to stick three across anyway (we couldn't do that in our old car due to the car being too narrow, but this one is wider as well as longer), and we actually quite like it. we have the oldest FF in the middle seat, with two RF on the outside, and it's nice because he can climb in himself. eventually i think we'll move that FF seat to the way back especially when 4yo and 1.5yo start fighting more but for now it's nice to have them all in arm's reach.

Depends on the ages of your other kids and if they are RF/FF/booster.

But I have my two big kids in the 3rd row (Van). One FF and one in a booster. Then the baby is in a captains chair behind the driver and I folded the other seat (behind passenger) down so it’s super easy to get in/out and I have somewhere to change the baby etc.

We couldn’t fit a RF car seat in the 3rd row, so that may limit your options. Just a heads up.

When we had captains chairs and three kids we put our 3 year old in the back, younger two in the middle (but they were both RF)

When we got a a new car with a middle bench, DS2 was FF; we put the older two in the back, youngest in the middle row. Now we have 4 so there are just kids everywhere 🤦🏻‍♀️😂😂

We just had our third, and our older two are the same ages as yours. Our five year old is in the far back because she can buckle herself in. We can fit the other two in the middle, but have put our two year old in the back a few times. I didn’t like having to basically climb in to buckle her up though. Because of that, if I had to have someone in the back at all times, I’d probably actually put the infant back there. It’s easy to just pop the infant seat into the base.
