I'd suggest to your boss that you start this on a trial basis, and that you make sure you do good work on those days and make doubly sure your boss knows it. I think it's a lot easier to advocate for an alternative work schedule if your supervisors feel confident and have evidence that there's no disruption to work activities and that you're consistently productive with an alternative schedule.

If its so infrequent, I would ask on an as needed basis. The day before, I would ask my boss "is it ok if I work from home to tomorrow? I have no child care and the work I plan to do doesn't require me to be here". Something like that. I'm sure you can word it more eloquently. :)

My job has been amazingly flexible with me returning to work. I've come back to 3 shorts days a week, next week I'll make it 4. I set the hours that I want to work. Because of how nice they've been, I don't want to take advantage of them, but I'd like to work at home once in a while.
I have some projects to do that wouldn't require me to access our POS software or call customers, rather I would just need to hang out with my design software and design promo flyers. I wouldn't ask to work from home even 1 day a week, maybe 1 every 2 or 3. It would be great on days when DH is supposed to be with LO and I need to work but he has to go in. Instead of putting her with the baby-sitter for an extra day, I could just stay home.

Does that seem reasonable to you? Other than the boss, there isn't any other position that would allow to stay at home, so the issue hasn't come up before. Plus, I'd be able to stay in contact with the store via email and cell anyways.
