I think it depends on the kid. My son has always been able to hold concentration for longish periods of time. My daughter, not so much. Maybe with the play doh example, ask them to make something like a pizza or use cut outs to make animals. Maybe giving them a goal and a bit of direction could help?

That is a totally normal attention span. I have started making "tot trays" which are Montessori inspired but not strictly Montessori. If you google it you will find zillions of ideas. Those activities tend to keep LO busy for longer. Also, my 2.5 year old is really into puzzles right now! He loves the small 12 piece Melissa and Doug puzzles the best.

Totally normal haha! My son turned 3 in June and I've noticed he's just started playing with one thing for more than 20 minutes in the more recent weeks. He's really into puzzles now and I think that's helping a lot with the attention span -I'm amazed he doesn't get frustrated. We like the Melissa & Doug wooden ones that are 12 pieces. Do they like reading? The Curious George books were good longer ones that would keep his attention.

It's definitely the age. DD is 3.5 and just moved to the preschool room and one of their goals of the school year is to build attention span. :p

My 2.5 year old twin boys seem to have shorter attention spans every day...is it just this age? Boys? Tips on how to help?
Examples:
Play dough...fun for five minutes. Then it gets thrown on the floor or they're running away from the table.
Train set...fun for up to ten minutes. Then they want to rip the tracks apart.
Cars/trucks...fun for five minutes until one decides he must have the other's truck. Even if it the exact same one.
Help! Or is it a this too shall pass thing?
