thank you all! I took your advice and called the pediatrician for a second opinion and they said benzocaine and lidocaine (asked the dentist what they used for anaesthesia) are perfectly OK to nurse with. phew! I was going to panic there for a minute...

My dentist is hyper-cautious and says the same thing but my LC says otherwise.

Last time I had dental work done I completely forgot that I wasn't supposed to nurse and I went home and nursed immediately. All was well :)

What type if anesthetic did they give you? I work in dental and have never heard this. It is a local that's given. It only effects the area it's injected into.

I would get a second opinion, many doctors/dentists are not educated on breastfeeding safe options and it's easier to tell patients to just not breastfeed than it is to research the options.

I've heard doctors tell patients "You can't breastfeed while you are on this, so get some formula or use frozen milk" several times, only to look up the drug and discover that it is completely safe or there is an alternative drug that is safe. :/

I would get a second opinion. Definitely pump and dump if you do have to avoid nursing, but I'm skeptical.

For novacaine? That seems excessive. What's the anesthetic?

your pediatrician might have suggestions about your options, too.

I would talk to the doctor about your options - there are plenty of anesthetics that are fine for nursing.

I'm at the dentist for a filling, and they just mentioned to me that I'm not to nurse for 24 hours, due to the anesthetic.

Now, my LO is 13 months, so I know he can physically go 24 hours with no breastmilk, but he's very attached to the boob, and I'm not sure how to proceed! He doesn't take bottles any more, and he's not reliable with his cups. He nurses for naps, for comfort, at bedtime, and several times during the night, fml! :(

Any tips? What's a good substitute or distraction for LO? He's never gone without nursing for this long, poor guy :( Should I pump (and dump) for supply?
