It seems like this is getting out of control with our LO. At the grocery store, at Target, etc. she's always asking for something. I have said that we'll ask Santa in a letter but we don't know if he'll bring them or not.

I take pictures on my phone or write it down on whatever paper is lying around. I let them know we can't have everything but that I can choose from their list when it's time to buy them a gift (birthday/Christmas). 99% of the time acknowledging it in a serious way seems to squelch the gimmies.

A blog I read - bower power - takes a quick pic of them holding the item they want and she says it works really well because they feel heard and know she won't forget since she has the pic. My LO is 2 weeks old, so I dont have this problem yet!

@hummusgirl: Same. I just validate and move on. However, she has a crazy memory, but I'll do the explaining if and when she remembers.

Thankfully, we haven't encountered that yet. I think it helps that we only watch shows on PBS Kids which doesn't have commercials for toys, that I've seen.

But she has asked for random things. And she has a wicked good memory. Like she asked for a bell for her scooter over 6 months ago. She's told me twice since that I forgot to get it for her. Oops. Haha she's getting one in her stocking for Christmas.

@hummusgirl: Same!

DS1 doesn't ask often (mainly just at Target) but when he does, we just acknowledge it and he moves on.

I just validate it by saying "Oh! You want that!" and leave it at that. He has a short memory when it comes to things. Or sometimes I'll say "Ok great, let's remember that for your birthday next year." I think he just wants to be heard more than he wants whatever it is.

Every channel we turn too has something that makes DD1 say "Oh I want that!" even if it's not something she would play with at all. We have really been talking with her about how sometimes we don't get everything we want. But I've resorted to Santa only has so much room in his sleigh and that other kids need the toys too. She's only 3 so reasoning isn't always easy when it comes to "I want I want I want!"
