That sounds like our fall!

I did cotton sleepers in the newborn days, and pants + long sleeved onesie (or long sleeved shirt) + socks plus a lightweight jacket when she was a year old.

It may depend on your baby too! My baby runs really hot so even when it is cool outside I'm apt to put her in less than most probably would because otherwise she is so sweaty when I take her out of her car seat!

I don't think I ever used fleece except for sleepers. Layers are the biggest thing. I do put LO in long sleeve onesies in the winter, but I still use the short sleeve with something over (like a light long sleeve shirt). When he was little, he was often in his car seat which is already somewhat warm and if typically have an A&A blanket over him anyway. We do use fleece blankets for walks in winter. (I'm in San Diego.)

I think the general rule is one more layer than you're wearing. So if you're in a long sleeved shirt and pants, I would have my LO in a sleeper with a blanket over. If you're wearing a jacket over long sleeves, I might do a onesie under a sleeper with a blanket over. A&A blankets are awesome for layering because they're so light.

I don't live in a warm winter climate, but I think dressing a newborn is basically the same everywhere - you want layers. Even in Southern California, it's still winter, so it's not like you will be going out in a short-sleeved onesie and bare feet. I would start with cotton sleep and plays (Carter's and Gap have great selections). Maybe have 1-2 in a warmer/heavier fabric. Add cotton hats and socks (to wear underneath the footed sleep and plays when it's chilly). You will also need a blanket or two to wrap around your baby in the car seat or stroller.

Hi Ladies,

So question for those of you who had winter newborns in warm climates. What did you dress them in when going outside? We live in Southern California and our baby is due in early January. It never really gets very cold here. January and February might have a low of 50 during the day at the coldest but most days it’s around 58(ish.) How would I dress my newborn when going out in this weather? How many layers and what about her head, feet and hands? Would a cotton hat work or do I need something warmer like fleece? Feeling a little lost.

Thanks for your help!
