I also always keep a fleece jacket in the stroller and in the car, just in case of sudden temperature changes, esp. with air conditioning.

Get the short sleeve because you can always add a blanket. Also there are these short sleeve side snap tees. This is what we used because we didn't have to put them over his head and we had access to the diaper. Especially at the doctors because you have to undress them for weight and everything.

Most of the time my little one just had a diaper on.

@MegWag: Good to know - thanks for sharing! I know our nephew started to fuss and scream whenever he got too warm, so if the baby seems to be crying for "no reason" he/she might be uncomfortable.

Last summer we dressed DS in onesies and one piece outfits. I always had an Aidan and Anais blanket with us (they are awesome). They were great to block the sun and light enough if it was breezy, but not heavy enough to make DS too hot.

Our weather here is changing by 10-30 degrees from day to day, so we've had to be prepared for anything. Monday DS was hot in a short sleeved onesie and light knit pants, and the next day he had a fleece coat and hat on.

Definitely shirt sleeved onesies at home. If we went out, I put a pair of pants on her, too.

Thanks for all of the advice. We have tons of short sleeved onesies and a pack of Aden + Anais swaddles. Sounds like that will be plenty on those hot days.

The multipacks of onesies at Carters are cheap enough (if you have a coupon for an additional 20% even moreso) that I'd buy a set of long sleeved and short sleeved.

I followed the same rule that @msmini described...the "one layer more than you" rule. I still follow that rule now when all else fails.

In NICU we always teach the "one layer more than you" rule, so if you are comfy in shorts and a t-shirt, a short sleeves onesie, shorts, and light blanket is probably appropriate. If you are feeling warm in shorts and a tank top, just a short sleeve onesie is probably best. I have noticed that 90% of the time, parents err on the side of over-dressing/over-covering their babies! For spring/summer babies stock up on the lightweight (muslin) swaddlers!

We had socks on her always but inside a lot of times she just wore socks and a diaper and slept in her diaper and a swaddle. Outside I had wide brim hats for her and always had a thin blanket as an extra layer of protection from the sun if she was in a short sleeve onsie. She wore a lot of dresses when we went out though

@mediagirl: Our pediatrician said that especially in the heat, the baby feels the same thing that you feel (temperature wise). Don't cover her up in blankets or put her in something that you wouldn't want to be wearing! I say if it's too hot for you to wear long sleeves, it is too long for LO to be in long sleeves.

Ugh, now I'm totally rethinking my decision to get mostly long sleeve onesies for our baby due at the end of June. I heard that you were always supposed to put an extra layer on the baby.
I guess I'll be checking baby's temperature a lot & buying some new onesies.

@Goldilocks1107: Just FYI- The midwife told us that babies often have cold feet and hands and that their torso/midsection is a better indicator of their temperature...

DD was born 6/8; I mostly had her in short-sleeve onesies and a swaddle, or she was in the light cotton, long-sleeve sleep n' play outifts. It's generally in the 80's here in the summer time, so a little cooler than where you are.

I'm due just a few weeks before you and for newborn and 0-3 stuff (ie, late May and June) got some long-sleeved sleepers, some long sleeved onesies and some short sleeved onesies and shorts, too. In Boston, it will either be like 60 or 90, you just never know! For 3-6 I pretty much have all summer stuff.

I'm due in 5 weeks and am going with short sleeves/no sleeves. I figure if I'm hot and sweaty, the baby's got to be roasting if she can't regulate her body temp. And maybe use foot temperature to see if she's getting cold/hot (that's what my SIL did with her baby in the winter).

I know that infants don't regulate their temperatures very well or at all until a certain age. So, do you dress them like you're dressed - in shorts and a tank top, or do you put them in long sleeves - like a long sleeved onesie?

I would like to purchase some plain white onesies for our LO, but don't know whether to get long sleeve or short sleeve for her first three months of life. We live in the south and she'll be born in June.

When we take her home from the hospital, I'm afraid if she's in long sleeves and it's 85/90 degrees outside, she'll be a sweaty mess until we get the a/c going. I'm starting to have a lot of first time mom jitters and I still have 7+ weeks to go!

Did you have a summer baby? How did you dress her?
