I tried out the timing on the weekends first. We did bottles every 3-4 hours - 7, 10/11, 3/4, 7. Then when he went to daycare I asked them to keep the same schedule, but sent an extra bottle just in case. He never had a problem with it. And then we transitioned the 10/11am and the 3/4pm bottles to solids snacks. He was done with bottles pretty by his 1st birthday :).

DS1 naturally dropped down to 4 bottles closer to 1. DS2 is still taking 5 bottles a day, sometimes 6, and he's 11 months. I'm not worried about it. He'll do it on his own at his own pace. Some days he is more into solids and drinks less. He's been sick so lately it's more bottles. Guidelines are good but I also follow my baby's cues.

@PurplePeony: I have no idea whether he is ready. I am not thrilled with my pediatrician (a separate issue), but I think there may be some validity in her suggestion. He will eat a good amount of solids if he is hungry at meal time, but often the spacing of his nursing and bottle feeding times is too close to meal times so he isn't hungry. The ped knows he is breastfed, also I chatted with a friend of mine who said her son was down to four feedings a day by 9 months...

I definitely don't want to starve him, but I do want to stop pumping at a year and I would like to prepare him for the transition. He is getting 3 5oz bottles currently, I was thinking about going to 2 6oz bottles spaced between meals and seeing how that goes.

Do you think your LO is really ready to drop a bottle? My DD didn't drop to two bottles at daycare until she was a year old and moved up a room, and her ped never said anything about dropping a feeding. She didn't eat a ton of solids until then so she would have been starving if we tried to reduce her milk at 10 months...if your LO is a good eater with solids, you might be fine though. Are you sure your ped wasn't talking about FF babies? BM is digested a lot faster so I don't think it's unusual for BF babies to take more feedings. But I'm not a doctor, so this is just based on my own experience.

DS is 10 months old and is still nursing/taking a bottle of breastmilk 5 times during the day (nurses morning and night, 3 bottles at daycare) and once overnight. At our well visit with the pediatrician last week she said most babies at his age are only getting 4 milk feedings total. I plan to stop pumping at a year and to ease the transition for me and for him, I think it is time to move him to 2 bottles at daycare instead of 3 which will hopefully also get him to eat more at mealtimes.

The pediatrician suggested just eliminating the third bottle and moving the remaining two between meals. Are there other ways to do it?

How did you go about dropping a daytime feeding?
