@Oliviapope: Awesome update!
I didn't comment before because @gingerbebe: said everything I wanted to. Glad it all worked!
And you may find that over time, as she gets used to it all, she'll sleep later and later. My son was 6/6:30 wakes for a long time (but full disclosure, we still never ever got him before 7). Now he's more like 7/7:30 and today he even slept till 7:45 which felt luxurious.

I also just commented on your post about going to the beach alone. FYI there are temporary blackout shades that we travel with. 👍🏼 Let me know if interested.

@Oliviapope: great update! Our dohm and blackout shades are lifesavers. In fact, when our hunter Douglass shades broke, you'd better believe I learned how to uninstall and subsequently install them (YouTube!) instead of waiting for a repairman on either end. I physically took them to the store and then physically took them to ups to expedite it myself!!!!

Updating!

I followed so much of this advice. Lots of long talks about sleeping at night, etc. DH and I stuck to no milk at wake ups. And then I got blackout curtains and a marpac dohm and life has been so different. She sleeps all night!

She's still waking up around 6, and I'd love to get closer to 7, but I'll take what I can get! I'm thinking about an OK to Wake clock, but DH isn't totally on board with that yet. We may get there though :)

Thanks for all the great advice.

@ShootingStar: I worry about this too but then again we haven't started potty training. i can't wrap my mind around how night training works. I'll have to solve my problems one at a time

@Pancakes: thank you - I will look at that one. I had one that was similar when she was aroudn 15 months and we didn't like it, but I'm guessing it will be easier now that she's older.

@ElbieKay: I would love if this works, but I don't sleep the same when she's in bed with me - I feel like I open my eyes every 15 minutes. I do love the snuggles though. Other times she gets so excited to get in our bed that she can't settle down.

@snowjewelz: Thank you for asking! I rocked her in her recliner and talked to her about sleeping all night, mommy and daddy sleep at night when it's dark out. I talked to her about waking up in the morning when it's light out. That if she woke up in the dark she could take a deep breath (she loves to do that) and roll over and cuddle her bunny. I didn't expect it to work - but she slept until 5:30 (gets bright in her room early).

I got up with her and praised her for sleeping all night, being a big girl, etc. Here's hoping it keeps working!

@Oliviapope: We've had good luck with using the Munchkin Miracle 360 cup as a nighttime water cup. It's not totally 100% leak-proof, but it's better than most cups we've tried.

@ShootingStar:Both my kids have gone to bed with water, I guess around 12-18 mos. They don't drink all night long, but if they wake up thirsty and need a sip, it's there. It didn't really seem to be an issue with nighttime potty training for my oldest, but I also didn't try to night train her at the same time we day-trained.

thank you. this is helpful. I started tonight by talking to her in our bedtime routine about staying in bed, no milk tonight, etc. I needed to read your comments to realize that yes, she will get it. May take a few nights, but we will get there.

Now to look for a water bottle - the Gizmo looks good - I haven't liked Contigos before because they've been hard to clean, but this one looks good.

Thanks for the advice! Here's hoping I stay strong :)

I would definitely start by explaining things to her "tonight you need to sleep all night long. If you wake up we will get you water but no milk...blah blah blah". She will definitely understand. It may be a rough couple wake ups but she'll catch on quickly. Agree with water in her crib. My son has had a 360 water cup in his crib since he was about 18 months. We rarely go to him if he wakes in the middle of the night (it makes him worse) unless he's up for a while or hysterical.

From the sole perspective of dental health I'd stop the milk as soon as possible. Milk sugars just sitting on teeth all night. Maybe have a straw cup ready to go for the first few nights and offer that. After those few nights leave the cup in the bed. But don't take her out of bed.

My son is 29 months and if he wakes at night he comes and gets us (not ideal, but he's in a bed). I scoop him up, kiss him and hug him and tell him that "it's night time, it's dark....time to go back to bed....love you....see you in morning" and then I tuck him back in bed. Unless he is sick this is the routine. On repeat until he stays in bed (and pretty much it's just he comes and gets us once). We keep a water bottle on his night stand, which he is welcome to, but he's not allowed a snack or milk MOTN.

Agree with pp's. A water bottle in the corner of the bed and not taking her out of the crib. We are going through a phase where DS will cry if my wife leaves him but not for me. I go in and talk with him and he seems to understand. I say it's sleep time, here's your blankie, mommies are going to sleep too, etc. and rub his back or tummy for a minute and then leave. We keep it quick and not exciting and it usually works.

I have a 30 month old, and I feel like at that age you should be able to talk them through it? Maybe before bed, you can start telling her that when she wakes up, you will go in for a little bit but she has to stay the crib, etc?

Some nights when I solo bed time, and I can't lay there with her till she is asleep, I've been able to tell her that I'll be back and that she has to wait for me, etc.

Perhaps you can not take her out of the bed when you go to her at night. Go in prepared with a cup of milk or better yet, a cup of water, and hand it to her. And then tell her to lay down and sooth her while standing over the crib as opposed to holding her. If she wants a hug, you can hug her while she's standing up or something, but no coming out of the bed because its night-night time.

Then over time, maybe you can put her to bed with a water bottle when you tuck her in at night? My son is 32 months old and I would say about 28 months he started constantly asking/wanting a water bottle in his bed with him when we put him to bed. We use the Contigo Gizmo straw cup because it doesn't leak and he usually drinks at least half a bottle overnight.

I'm feeling like I've created some bad toddler sleep habits.

DD is 28 months. She's generally been a pretty good sleeper. She'll go a few weeks with no wake ups and then go a few weeks with 1 wake up a night most nights of the week.

When she wakes in the middle of the night we wait five minutes before going to her. We bring a 1/2 cup of milk because she'll ask for it when we take her out of the crib. We sit in a recliner, she drinks milk, falls asleep on us. Putting her back in the crib - my husband can transfer pretty easily, if it's me she loses it and gets all worked up again.

I don't mind going to get her in the middle of the night but I can't sleep in the hair with her or stay up for a long time.
I'm thinking we may be reinforcing bad habits and should consider changing the way we do things. She also seems more difficult on the days she doesn't get as much sleep.

Anyone been through/going through this? Or any recommendations for good advice/books/resources? Thanks!
