@tofuwad: good to know. I'll definitely be grabbing some next time I go to the Asian grocery store. As long as I can remember... Haha! Usually we just run in for sushi ingredients.

@Mrs. Goose: I love that stuff too in restaurants too! Nori is a different product so you'd need to buy wakame. But wakame is available at any Asian market and at Whole Foods (it'll be way cheaper at an Asian market). You buy it dehydrated. But the kinds at sushi restaurants will have sugar added and other sea vegetables like dulse, hijiki, and agar agar strands (I think this is also usually dyed green in seaweed salad?? But I'm not positive).

So if you wanted one that's just like the kinds in a restaurant you'd need to add sugar to the recipe and find the other ingredients too.

@tofuwad: I am addicted to that at sushi restaurants. Do you have to buy that type of seaweed or can you soak the sheets you would use for making sushi?

Do you have a Costco? Usually in the sushi prepared food section they have a big bucket of marinated seaweed salad they sell - it's the sweet and tangy sesame kind you get at Japanese restaurants. You can eat that a cold side dish with grilled fish or teriyaki chicken and warm rice. Or you can chop it up and add to Chinese chicken salad or Asian-y soba or pasta salad. I also see the cucumber salad from Japanese restaurants often mixed in with the same kind of seaweed in miso soup. I think that's wakame.

@Mrs. High Heels: thanks! My kids love the Japanese version but DH doesn't like miso, so this might be a good alternative!

Korean seaweed soup! So so delicious and a great way to get in lots of seaweed. My kids love it their rice soaked in this soup. http://www.koreanbapsang.com/2013/12/miyeok-guk-beef-seaweed-soup.html

I usually gorge myself on wakame salad. I typically just rinse the wakame and then soak in water for 10-20 minutes. Drain and squeeze out the excess water. Then make a simple dressing out of rice vinegar, soy sauce, toasted sesame seeds, and sesame oil. If I'm feeling fancy I'll add some Persian cucumbers, grated Asian pear, and/or maybe some lime or grated fresh ginger. I will eat it with rice and Korean beef. Or sometimes just eat an entire giant bowl for lunch and then worry that I'm going to OD on iodine.

@Mrs Panda: look for packs of kombu in the grocery by the other seaweed packets, or in an Asian grocery! You can also order it online. A little goes a long way.

My LO loves eating white rice with toasted nori, or making veggie maki rolls with nori. We also keep some furikake seasoning (nori flakes, sesame seeds, sometimes salt and sugar) to sprinkle on rice and veggies. I also put some kelp in the pot if I'm cooking beans, and put dulse on salads sometimes.

Looking for suggestions and recipes for incorporating seaweed into meals. My kids love it and I feel like I should take advantage of that, especially since it's so nutritious. The only way I know how to cook it is in miso soup with little tofu cubes. Any other suggestions?
