Also it helps when he sits on my lap and we're right next to something that he can sort of climb on and explore because he can use all four limbs and support his own weight. The OT said that will help him start crawling.

Our OT showed us a few things, although they do involve keeping him still:
1) Hold his upper body up so he's on his knees, kind of kneeling. It gives him the feeling of bearing his weight on his knees but you're not allowing his butt to collapse.
2) When he's on all fours, try to support his upper body so that his arms are straighter (though maybe not locked) and you'll start to feel him support his own weight a little.
3) Also when he's on all fours, keep bringing his arms into center if he tends to splay them out and collapse.

My LO didn't pull up to standing or crawl until after 16 months. We started pt around 14 months and we had a couple of exercises that we worked on 2-3 times a day...lots of kneeling holds, holding over knee in crawling position. LO hated every exercise.

Our PT has told us to make sure his fists are open and not balled as he learns to crawl. That might be a place to start?

@Foodnerd81: hardwood and foam mats. We usually take his pants off when we're really working with him even if it's on the foam mats.
Yeah sometimes when he's playing in the floor in his jammies he slides everywhere. Haha!

@Danizaur: is he on a rug or hardwood? I found with C if she was wearing pants on wood floors, she couldn't keep her knees under her. Of course it was a lot warmer at the time, but I would have her in just onesies so her knees could grip the floor better.

@sarac: Nope not at all

@Anagram: I'm hoping it will go fast once we can get it to click for him. He takes steps with a lot of support (we have to bear most of his weight). I think his ped just wants us to get him some more help so he doesn't have to fall farther behind. I try not to worry but untol he's running around I don't think I'll ever stop. Haha

@Danizaur: my LO didn't get off her belly to crawl until a little after she was 11 months old. She was also late to sitting up unassisted (7 months but didn't sit up straight till 8 months).

But she was cruising by 12 month, first steps were at 13 months and she was walking full time at 14 months so she wasn't a late walker.

Her Ped was never concerned. She was belly crawling at 6 months but never figured out the crawl position till 11 months.

Does he pull up? My daughter didn't crawl until 12 months, and I wasn't worried about it. She was crusing along furniture at that age, though.

@MrsBananaGrabber: We thought that for a little bit, but at the same time, he doesn't pull up or lift his belly at all. We tried for a while to work on walking and skip crawling, but it's almost like without that bridge of crawling and pulling up, he can't transition into cruising or walking. He doesn't have the strength and coordination that he could have gotten from crawling.

According to my parents, I never crawled. I became an expert roller, and could maneuver all over the house like that, then went straight to walking without ever going through the crawling stage. I am now a perfectly healthy adult.

Every kid is different- he'll eventually be completely mobile. :)

@gilmoregirl: He's sitting up great! Thanks! That's something we haven't tried.

@charlotte: He actually can do 360s on his belly already. He'll point himself towards something he wants but when it's out of reach he just cries and gives up. He scoots backwards by pushing with his hands sometimes but it just doesn't seem to connect with him if that makes sense? I'm looking forward to EI! Thanks!!

I am really enjoying a blog written by an occupational therapist right now. About halfway down this page there are a few links to posts about helping them crawl: http://mamaot.com/developmental-milestones/

We started EI at 11 months for no crawling / pulling up. The first thing the PT did was working on a pivot, so we placed things of interest sort of to the side and behind. Once he realized he could move himself to it he began army crawling in all directions. Next we would place him in traditional crawling stance and move his arms and legs like he was crawling over to something to pull up on (in our case bookshelf). Over time he got stronger and remembered the motion and was motivated to get to things and pull up. Just a toy or mirror on the floor was never enough for our guy to care either. We've had great success with PT and he is totally caught up now at almost 2. wall me if you have any questions!

How is he at sitting up? My friend had a late crawler, and she would sit him up and place a high-interest item just out of reach. The baby would reach for the item and eventually kind of end up on all fours. I have no idea whether that helped her baby learn to crawl, but it did get the baby to move differently.

T is 10.5 months and not crawling. He's not getting off of his belly during tummy time. We're in the process of starting EI but we're trying to help him on our own while we wait. His ped was able to show us that he can be placed in the crawling position which was exciting. But we don't have much success of doing it ourselves at home. I don't know if it's because we don't know what we're doing or T doesn't take us seriously. Haha
We can get him in it, but only if we forcibly hold him in that position supporting him. He holds himself up on his hands but constantly wants to lay back down. His ped got him to hold the position himself.

Besides forcing him into it and holding him still, which only makes him mad, what are some other ways? He gets even more mad with a mirror or a toy in front of him because now he can't reach for it in the crawling position. We're looking at at least another 2 weeks before we can start physical therapy and as we approach his first birthday I feel like I'm wasting time.
